Just bought a used F150 and coming up on an oil change, thought I would ask for recommendations for oil brand and type.

1. 2013 F150 XLT Supercrew 3.5L Ecoboost
2. Owners manual - 6 qts Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 XO-5W30-QFS
3. Shreveport, LA (it gets hot and humid)
4. I like to let the horses run on a regular basis, like to hear the tires chirp!
5. daily drive - 10 miles to work, takes 12 - 13 minutes with about 7 miles being interstate
6. no problems
7. prefer syn

Any suggestions?

Use Castrol Edge Extended Performance 5W30. This particular Castrol scored the best in the TOEST test according to AMSOIL. Your engine is direct injected meaning you want to avoid intake valve deposits. There really is no difference on how long your engine will last using Castrol vs Pennzoil vs Valvoline vs blah blah and blah . What oil you choose and intake valves however are another story.

Driven hard. Short trips. Direct injection. Choose a stout synthetic as skyactiv suggested and use a conservative OCI.

Any of the major synthetic oils are fine here. I'd use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum myself, but the Castrol, Mobil, Valvoline, and other options will do just fine.

More importantly, this engine suffers from fuel dilution. Limit your interval to 5,000 miles.

I have a 2014 Ecoboost ford f-150 tried PP M1 AFE and settled on M1EP 5W30 it is smooth and quiet and turbo approved, 12000 miles UOA showed I could have easily went to 15000 total.

Congratulations on buying a fun truck! I've had 3 'Boosts since they came out and currently have an '11 FX4 with 3.73s and a '14 Platinum with 3.55s. I haven't had one single problem with the lot ( although the FX4 is showing signs of needing a vacuum pump @ 89k miles). Time to sound like a broken record here:

Use a stout oil with short OCIs - I'm using Castrol Edge 0w-40 and Motorcraft filters on 3-4k change intervals. This protects against the perils of oil dilution - mainly timing chain wear. I would advise the use of premium fuel as well as the phenomenon of Low Speed Pre Ignition is well documented here: www.gf-6.com.

Change spark plugs every 40-50k miles and then just keep up with fluids. After all this you're good to go! And go indeed - these engines thrive on being hung out to dry, so enjoy the power as much as possible ie no traffic citations. And remember that most horror stories about these engines are due to scant maintenance or not being driven hard enough.

A good synthetic 5W-30 like Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline SynPower, Royal Purple, etc. I'd change it every 7,500 miles or before if the oil life monitor tells you to. Couple with a good filter like the FRAM Ultra Synthetic or a Mobil 1 filter.

So to sum it up...

Good quality oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles with good quality gas should do just right.

That a true statement?

I have used Shell gas and Shell Rotella oil for years, any reason to change?

I appreciate all the responses, thanks everyone.

Please post a scan of this UOA.

There isn't a 5w-30 Rotella oil, if meeting the manual requirements matter to you. Rotella T6 will work very well, although it's 5w-40. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 does, and it's a Shell product, if that's what you're looking for.

How about possibly Synpower 5w30 or just VWB? Member RBarrios(sorry if I misspelled it) has had success in his vehicle with VWB

Did not know that Pennzoil was a Shell product!

I have used Shell for my last two vehicles, have always believed keeping the oil clean and using top tier gas will make for a happy engine. In the mid 80s I was using Quaker State until a mechanic friend told me that it caused build up in the engine. Bounced around on products until landing on Shell. Seems to work good so far.

Again, thanks for all the responses and sharing of knowledge!

And so is Quaker State. In my view, the conventional offerings of Pennzoil, Quaker State, and FormulaShell are essentially interchangeable.

I am running 5w-30 Castrol Edge (not EP) and am approaching 5k. I will change it at 5k and send the oil in for a UOA. I am going with 0w-40 German Castrol for the next few OCI's

I've read lots of posts about keeping the OCI's short on GDI turbo engines including the 3.5 Eco-Boost but have yet to see a single UOA that backs these statements up with any sort of actual evidence for or against the short OCI's. My daily driving is similar to yours so we will see. The UOA will dictate if I stick with 5k OCI's or if I chose to extend the drain intervals.

That part number is for Motorcraft 5w30 full synthetic. If I had that truck I would be using a FL500S filter and M1 0W40 changed every 5k with oil separators on also.

Wait a minute, 0W-40 is not the recommended viscosity for that truck. I can't believe I'm hearing this from a guy who works in the Ford parts department. Part of your job is to guard those red bottles of Motorcraft oil with your life and then here you go recommending Mobil 1. The is an abomination.

True but this is a turbocharged direct injected engine with fuel dilution issues and a small sump.
