Hello and family friend of mine has a 2013 Cadillac CTS. Been using Mobil 1 5w30 and she said that since we are going to North Carolina beginning of October; what oil is good to use in car. I said can't go wrong with Mobil 1. Suggestions, thoughts and advice? She drives 95% highway miles and does very little stop and go driving.

Any Dexos syn 5w30 or maybe Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30. But I don't think this requires much thought...
She MUST use a Dexos certified oil. This V6 has a tendency to eat cam chains, a several thousand dollar repair. The Dexos oil was created to minimize this. The Dexos spec is tight, any dexos oil will be good. I believe that engine uses 5W30 and it must be that for the cam phasers. She is also supposed to get software updated for the oil life monitor on some of these.

I have been using a 10w30 full syn, non dexos non M1 (even though it shows that on the oil fill cap) in my 2006 Caddy CTS 3.6L and nary a problem. Not suggesting anyone else should, but I am not as giggly over dexos1 as some are. It is good, but I don't have an inflated paranoia gland that makes me worry about it.
She already had the update done for OLM. I said "I'd just stay with Mobil 1 5w30 and u could go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 if you like"

Note that you do not need a full synthetic, since a syn blend will suffice (anything dexos1 is acceptable). But there's usually a full synthetic on sale, so why not?

Tiredteucker: I also don't buy into GM's DEXOS thing either. We use a re refined oil aka "Safety Kleen ECO POWER" oil in these cars at work without issue.

That would be true, but my 2013 Silverado 5.3 got 10w30 and my current 2015 2500 6.0 Silverado also gets 10w30, non dexos, though both have a dexos1 recommendation. In fact every thing from my portable generator on up thru my commercial semi truck gets 10w30, though in different classifications... gas or diesel. Have not had a oil related engine problem in 40 years, and I have never had a dealership or OEM shop ever ask what brand or viscosity of oil I was using, even when getting some warranty work. Again, I just don't have an enlarged paranoia gland that makes me worry about dexos1. But that 2006 Caddy CTS did call for Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic, not 10w30 as you stated. Never used Mobil 1, ever. And that car runs as good as ever. Will keep it for a lot longer. It is in immaculate shape and runs great. And this next January, the license plates renewal goes down to $50 for the year because of its age.

What's the point of using 10w30? You live in Iowa, not Florida. Not that it's a huge difference either way, but the DEXOS spec's look solid and you might lose some fuel economy in winter...

DEXOS is something Gm created period. I don't honestly care either, car is out of warranty. Stop being so harsh also.

No authority on Dexos but I'd say this is reasonable. I'd likely favor the Mobil 1 0w30AFE, also currently on roll back at MW to ~$21 a jug. ~$9 after rebate. Just me.
