Someone on the Odyssey subreddit just posted that it’s been announced today through the “Honda Interactive Network” (apparently dealer-only communications) that Honda is extending powertrain warranty coverage for 2013-2017 Odysseys and Pilots for VCM-related fault codes (P0301-0304) related to misfires/carbon buildup in piston ring grooves from VCM.

Here’s his copy & pasted post:

This news just dropped on the Honda Interactive Network:

Warranty Extension: 2013-2017 Multi-Model VCM Misfire

Today, June 17, 2025, American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for certain 2013-2015 Pilot and 2013-2017 Odyssey vehicles. Piston ring effectiveness may be reduced due to excessive wear and oil sludge build-up, which can cause oil to adhere to the spark plug, potentially leading to carbon fouling and misfire triggering DTCs P0301 through P0304 and cause the MIL to come on.

American Honda is extending the powertrain warranty to cover repairs related to engine misfire (that triggers DTCs P0301 thru P0304) to 10 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

To further ensure customer satisfaction and confidence, any affected vehicles from now until January 31, 2026 will be covered regardless of time in service or mileage.

As always, perform an iN VIN status inquiry for all vehicles passing through your dealership to determine eligibility for any open campaigns.

Those vehicles use the 2nd generation of VCM...I wonder if this will also be extended to all vehicles that had that set-up. FWIW gen 3 hasn't really had any issues to show for it and it's been around for over a decade now. That said, I still muzzle my MDX with the gen 3 VCM for peace of mind.

How does a 2013/2014 qualify for 10 year warranty , asking for a friend . I own a 2015 Pilot with 135k but none of these issues yet. I did bother with muzzle , the spark plugs looked decent at 110k miles.

You missed this part:

Yep.

Best bet on the Hondas is to muzzle.

Our 2024 Odyssey has been with the S-VCM since it had 1000 miles.

And gets 5000 mi OCIs.
I managed to get my 05 to nearly 180k before the lack of muzzling caught up with me. But eventually it standed my wife and filled #3 cylinder with gobs of oil. IN my case it was more PCV issue than VCM per se, because the intake manifold was flooded with oil.

I think if I had an oil like VRP and was using it on 5k ocis all along, I'd probably still have an unmuzzled Odyssey and it would probably be still just fine, apart from a failed motor mount or similar (yet another hidden "bonus" the VCM gives you).

The joke's on us, since we paid extra on purpose to get the VCM in a Touring and not settle for the EX. (The EX-L I think also got VCM that year). So basically, for that vintage of Odyssey, Leather seats means VCM means PCV issues.

Once I cleaned the intake out and did a Molekule LC20 soak (IYKYK) in that cylinder, I muzzled it and the van has run fine since. And then I switched to VRP and it's been aging in reverse like Benjamin Button. 220k now and still runs great. If only I didn't have random dash fluttering noises (like a blend door or such), you'd think the van was half as old as it is.

You might need to unmuzzle it if you want to get this fixed under warranty.
NO reason to get anything fixed if it's muzzled. It's already fixed. And since the warranty extension applies regardless of age or mileage and the warranty is transferrable, you can wait until selling or trading in to unmuzzle and know the next owner is protected.

In CA, my understanding is most muzzles will not pass smog. If Honda "fixes" it, then the inspection problem goes away.

The time and mileage exemption is only until 1/31/26 - so there's a 7 and a half month timer ticking for many of these.

VCMTuner2 is now carb approved.
