2012 Rav4 V6 alternator replacement cost

Sure is interesting charging a battery on the side of the road. Plug it into a tree, maybe a stop sign?

And taking an Uber home to get the battery charger
Battery doesn't die at the same time as the alternator goes kaput (OP's word). Battery has a reserve capacity rating that's over an hour or more so it can still be driven after the alternator goes kaput.

Any chance you could get it to a auto/elect shop and they could rebuild your old alternator? I have had great luck with rebuilds of my alternators by a local shop. I have had nothing but trouble from remans from parts stores.

I must have missed the part where the OP said he noticed the alternator died, then drove for an hour until the car broke down.

my aunt got the alternator changed on her 2010 rav 4 with a 4 banger for $700 which included a new belt and a new alternator .

They did you no favors - Little high on labor - all data says 3.3hrs and their warranty is terrible when most shops are 2yr/24k miles or more. The price of the alternator is high as well. My cost on an AZ REMAN is $205 and brand new is $280. My charge with my markup on the NEW alternator would be about $305!

You mark parts up less than 10%? How do you keep the lights on?

Just throw a jump pack on and close the hood on it. You can drive with just the jump pack a short distance.

When my Venza V6 reached 100k mi in 2019, I made a 130amp alternator eBay junk yard purchase and the seller sent it directly to Performance Inc for rebuild. When u need an alternator now and the local shop does not have one for exchange. It is a problem.

$129.00

Back in the 70's you with the old carburetors that had a float, you MIGHT get an hour (more likely about 45 minutes) and that is with minimizing all electric loads, no AC (electric clutch), headlights off, radio off, exc.

Now days with computers (engine, seatbelt system, lane keeping assist, anti collision automatic braking, air-bags including automatic deploy if the vehicle starts to rool-over, black-box vehicle operating history recorder, and maybe even a few more), electric fuel-pump in the tank, the coils that open the fuel-injectors, electric steering, electric brakes, and maybe even a few more, about 10 to 15 minutes of running from the battery without the alternator is all you can expect a vehicle to get before the battery runs out of power and everything comes to a hault.

RC (reserve capacity) is a rating of how long it takes a fully charged NEW battery that is at 80 F. and is being discharged at 25 Amps, to discharge enough so the output voltage drops to 10.5 Volts.

However, a the total combined current draw for a modern vehicle can be much more than 25 Amps. And some systems like electric steering may go into a safe shutdown (stop assisting and become manual only, if the Voltage dips below a predetermined level for only a very short time, which can happen when there is a large draw from the battery such as when turning the steering wheel).

In July of 2022 I bought a new high output (350 Amps at engine RPM's of 2000 or more 185 Amps at idle), alternator for my 2016 Honda CR-V from APEX for $409.00 including shipping and they did not want a core.

This was the highest output alternator they make for my vehicle and it fits where the original was.

The one I got has a smaller pulley so it rotates faster and I had to put on a slightly smaller serpentine belt.

They also make lower output versions and some with the original pulley size.

Give them a call, they might make a new better than original for less than a new factory original. cost depending on what vehicle it is for.

I was just throwing numbers. My shop and everything is paid for so my cost to run is very low and I usually don't mark up very high like the big name shops. If I make $30 profit off of a part that, to me, is fair for doing nothing. We are a small, quality shop with a loyal customer base and always 3-4 weeks booked out because we are honest and don't gouge. Now if I had high overhead and multiple employees then my markup would be much higher. Also remember this shop is my retirement gig having retired from GM in 2022 so it's not as serious to make the maximum markup.

I cant make heads or tails out of that recept. How much did they charge to do the ac part? did they add oil? Shrader valves? It has to be itemized here and not a jumbled mess like that.

Good link for APEX. Don't forget about the "big 3". Even for a stock alternator. So many cars with wimpy inadequate wiring. New cars included, even high performance models.

350 amps in a Honda CR-V? :devilish::LOL: Tell us more. Are you running a food truck, a roach coach, or............... (LOL).
