Hey All! New to this forum. I have full synthetic oil in my 2012 Nissan Maxima with 30k miles on it. I'm looking for an oil that will give me the highest MPG. What would your recommend?

Lighter pressure on the throttle and a smooth, look ahead driving style.

Oil is a very small component of fuel economy. Keeping the car maintained, the tires inflated and addressing the nut behind the wheel will go much further than any oil choice you make.

In addition, combining trips, riding a bicycle or walking, and other things you can do to reduce your car usage will also save more than any motor oil choice.

You will only see very small if any improvement between oils for fuel mileage. I'm not sure what Nissan specs for an oil weight in that but a high VI 0w20 or 0w30 depending on what is required would be the best for.

IMO your foot will play the biggest part in maximizing MPG.

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy line.
Because marketing.
That being said, I commuted in a Maxima for a while, it is going to hurt no matter what you do. When I got into a Civic it was much better for gas savings.

Driving style matters more. Even if an oil can give you 3% better MPG, that's only 1mpg if you can average 30mpg across the whole tank....pretty insignificant.

Thanks everyone for the responses! Anything else I can do to increase MPG? I love my ride, and I find the topic of increasing my MPG's very interesting.

When it's time to buy tires, look at tires that have a low rolling resistance rating.

Aside from that you can shed all the "extra" weight off your car. Do you really use those back seats? Spare tire?, when was the last time you had a flat? I'm sure you can find all kinds of useless bits if you start looking...

Try adding tc-w3 oil to your fuel. 1 ounce per 5 gallons or so.
As far as different grades of oils go I went from Mobil 1 5w-20 to liqui-moly 0w-40 and I've not noticed any difference in fuel consumption that's measurable anyways.
I've been using liqui-moly mos2 in my engines for years and I've always found that it bumps up my fuel mileage. Its cheap and you can buy it at napa.
I've got a thread where I tracked my chargers mileage for 3000 miles to establish a baseline then added mos2 and tracked mileage for 5000 miles. I gained 3 mpg average but it was closer to 5 on the highway.
Look up that thread. Great info in it.
You will find a hater named Trajan trashing on the stuff. Personally I think the guy is lying about using it. He's adamant about how additives don't work so I have serious doubts he's using one.
There's many examples of mos2 increasing mileage in the forum however some users don't see any mileage improvements but everyone who actually uses the stuff does say their engines run more smoothly and better overall.

Proper maintenance goes a long way. Of course, check your tire pressure once a week. Slight underinflation can rob some mileage.

It may or may not be in your owner's manual, but both of my parents' Infinitis say that it is actually more economical to run the AC and put the windows up at highway speeds due to aerodynamic drag.

if you're a fan of Nissan, and want better gas mileage get an Altima. The time to get better mileage is before you buy. Recently got 38.8 mpg highway at speeds between 70 to 80 mph. It's in the design. Other than maintaining your Maxima you're pretty locked in to its current mpg.

Welcome aboard Srtaylor !

What tires are you running and what is their cold pressure set to?

What transmission, power-steering fluids are you running?

What make/model/grade engine oil and filter?

What is the spec on the Maxima (engine/transmission)?

2012 max vq35de specd for 5w30 rated at 290hp cvt trans. rated 19/29 mpg.

I have a 2012 Nissan Maxima SV premium.

I love the Altima, but I'm not a fan of the space inside the car. I am 6'0, and approximately 200 lbs. I currently have my tires inflated to 33, but I will increase to 37 psi. When I first bought the car, I was getting 34 on highway, which was great. Thanks for the 5w30 heads up! I look into a 5w30 full synthetic brand!

I would skip the 5w30 and look for a 0w30. Another option would be to run a mix of Toyota 0w20 and Mobil 1 0w40 (the Caterham blend, a mix of two easy-to-get, high VI oils).

Driving patterns will dictate fuel use but lighter/robust fluids can help. Higher pressure in the tires (within the safe limit) and lower-resistance tires can also have a dramatic impact.

Some engines run more efficiently on higher-octane fuel so that's worth investigating if you're not running a premium 91+ fuel already.
