changed the oil in a friends wrangler today, 3.8 V6, used Royal Purple 5W20 and a Bosch Distance Plus filter. Ive heard that RP no longer has the synerlec additive and thats its not as good as it used to be? correct me if im wrong. hes gonna do a 5K oci with this combo while its still under warranty.

I understand the warranty requirements, but that's a waste. If he's going to do 5k OCI's he doesn't need oil of that kind of price point to do it. PP or QSUD would still be overkill IMO but not so badly anyway.

Sorry I don't know about the synerlec but at 5k it hardly matters.

It depends on which version of RP he used. The street version doesnt have any.

Way too early to tell if the new RP Street oils without the Synerlac are not as good as they used to be. In an older vehicle that needs ZDDP that would ring true. However, in a modern vehicle where it is not required it may not be true. I would wager that the new RP street oils are pretty darn good all the same.

I have a 2011 Jeep too( Patriot )and I am running the RP 5W20 as well( the street stuff rated API SN )and an RP filter. I am happy with it so far. I also go with 5K OCI's during warranty. Easier for me to remember 5K intervals plus that is when I rotate the tires. Works out well for me.

Is it overkill? Sure as it would be with most any synthetic. Do I care? Not in the least.

+1 5k oil changes on anything above PYB is a waste of money. You can use Supertech and purolator classics for that change interval and have many many trouble free years. Tell him to save his money!

Not everyone thinks that using good enough is the way to go. Some of us prefer to use what we feel is the best product we can. It is not a waste of money if it is a product the person using it likes and believes does a good job.

I agree 100%. It's not a waste of time or money if it brings joy or pleasure to the person doing it. A lot of people think that washing cars is a waste of time. If that's so, I "waste" a ton of it.

Sounds like me( or it used to be before I got sick ). My neighbors used to say I was going to wash the paint off I detailed my vehicles so much.

I would agree that using the best will do a good job but 5k with Royal purple is far too few miles for such a quality oil. Any oil within SM/SN spec dino will last 5k without an issue what so ever. The point I was trying to make was that if you are going to use top quality products, use it longer!

Only if you base the reason on using an oil to be the length of service. I use RP for 5K as well and have no hesitation about doing so at all. It is all what the person who owns the vehicle feels the value or worth of using something is. Again, it is not a waste if the person using it feels it os worth it.

Due to warranty requirements the longest it could be run in the OP's Jeep( mine too )is 6 months or 8000.

I agree to a certain point. Feelings do not equal protection. But piece of mind is priceless to each is his own. IMHO there are far more important issues that would cost me more money than to worry about than if using a motor oil that exceeds warranty requirements feels good enough.
