The only Jeeps I would consider are a Willys which are no longer made and hard to find or if Chrysler brought back the Cherokee version that was discontinued.

The Grand Cherokee has never done it for me and the TJ/Rubicon etc. are rust buckets.

We've got about a dozen new GC's on the lot. They are very nice, inside and out. Jeep spent a lot of time and money improving the GC, especially the interior. A significant leap forward from the previous generation.

In some models you can get a very sophisticated 4WD system with air suspension and user selectable ride heights. Adaptive cruise control and collision warning systems will be available.

Jeep is going after Lexus, Cadillac, and other luxury SUV's while producing a car with traditional Jeep capabilities. I only wish I could afford a new one.
 
The Cherokee Classic is a great vehicle. That unrefinement was the Jeep trademark. It was a work horse, not a mall crawler. An 80's Cherokee hauled my Xterra outta the mud. Was a sad day

The heep has its victory that day. I was thinking of getting one for winter use and throwing some M/T - A/T on it. Talking about a 500-1k clunker I would partially fix.

You're from California so off-roading probably involves anything off pavement?

Probably the same set that did it with the then new Hummer in the mid-90's.

Very nice. The V-6 fuel economy #'s look pretty decent for a non-"crossover" type SUV.

The $30K+ sticker still turns me off a bit but its on par with its class anymore.

I think it's very much a "crossover" type SUV. It's based on Mercedes' ML platform as I understand, and uses fully independent suspension front and rear. GM's Acadia/Enclave, Ford's Explorer, and Jeep's Grand Cherokee all appear aimed at the same market niche now.
 
The combination of unit construction and IRS do bring it pretty close to being a crossover, but keeping to its RWD-biased tradition usually means a little more capability when the pavement ends or towing a trailer.

I haven't looked close enough but I assume all 4x4 GC's still have a 4WD low range as well.
 
GCs have been unibody for a long time and Hummers had IRS. This is clearly not a crossover.

I think this is one of the nicer designs Chrysler has put out in a while, I like it. MUCH better than the Durango.

I can follow the logic until I remember you drive a Santa Fe...does...not...compute...
 
I bought it because it was the only vehicle I can fit in properly of a "foreign" nature which I believe to be more reliable. It also was available at 0% financing on a Sunday when I bought it because I totaled my car on the Thursday from hitting a deer and needed a new car for work right away.

Sometimes you can't be choosy. Nevertheless it has been a super great vehicle, reliable and built very well. I would take it off road against a new tin-can Jeep Grand Cherokee or Liberty any day of the week.

It's stronger than it looks...

Considering the Sante Fe's poor approach angle and lack of a low range I hope you are joking. The Grand Cherokee would eat the Santa Fe's lunch off (or on) the road.
 
Look up the off-roading reviews of the Santa Fe versus other SUV's and you might be surprised.

I have the older generation which is a bit higher than the newer more plastic version...
 
Its apples and oranges, the Santa Fe simply can not compete with a 4WD Jeep GC off road. The Jeep was designed with stuff like this in mind...

I honestly don't think the 2006 Santa Fe could have approached that rock without scraping the heck out of the front bumper first, much less climbed it without proper lockers or a low range.

One is purpose built to work (GC/SUVs), one is purpose built to look like it might be able to work (Santa Fe/crossovers).

If the quality is there, I think Jeep hit a home run with the new GC.
