2011 Hyundai Elantra

FWIW ,I just read Consumer Reports(Apr 2011)put Elantra as the top pick in the small car catagory.
Test score:full red dot
Reliability:half red dot(due to new model)
Hwy Mpg:39...overall Mpg:29
Their stated price :$18445

I got one, no problems yet, but as ststed, it's a new design, new transmission and engine. Time will tell.

2 liters--? does it have to go uphill?
No idea about the new model but our 2003 is still rock solid with zero repairs and 165k miles...
The new models look gimmicky, but i haven't heard any real negative things about them, in general.
The Elantra is a big seller for Hyundai and with all the positive press it's getting, I don't think Hyndaai will cheapen it and take a risk... i'd say go for it.

As I have said on other occasions ..Hyundai and Ford are the 2 marks that are hitting on all cylinders right now.
I think a new Elantra will serve you very well for a long time.
The new Focus has more refinement but the Hyundai costs less.

You say everything opposite of what professional car testers say. people are praising the Elantra, Hyundai in general, to be high quality and refined. I sat in the Elantra and it was on par, if not better, than other cars in its class. You seem very anti-Hyundai.

I looked at them recently. No spare tire! Its to save weight, therefore to increase gas mileage on sticker. Salesman said its not needed because "Hyundai offers road side assistance". I laughed at him. Sure I'll wait 2 hours for your guy to come tow me to a dealer. What a joke....
They also wouldn't come a DIME off MSRP. Who are they kidding?
Civic, Sentra, and Corolla all offer the same for less dime, and have a much better track record.

Hyundai is the new Toyota for media frenzy, and as with Toyota, many people will find out that Hyundai cars are nothing special when truly compared to the rest of the competition.

I would generally agree with this. People make so much about this brand vs. that brand. Overall, most every car out there has a good chance of being very reliable when given the proper maintenance.
