We just purchased the LS model. On our last two GM vehicles, they had MPG on the display. Apparently, the next package up has that on the Traverse. Anyone know if you can go to the dealer and just add "Fuel Economy" to the DIC (Driver Information Center, or better known as the dashboard)? It's all I'd want added, so if I had to pay for a whole level, it wouldn't be worth it to me.

I wanted to do the same with my Trailblazer when I bought it. The dealer said it wasn't possible given the cost and labor involved.
After I joined a forum a few people did it, but it was very involved. IIRC - at least on the Trailblazer the clock spring in the steering wheel had to be replaced as well as the obvious display. I decided to live without it.

NHGUY's suggestion would be MUCH easier and cheaper.

I have a ScanGauge II, but the Ultra Gauge which also displays instant MPG is less than half the price. Right now their website is showing $69 after a $9 rebate.

My Mom's last car, a RWD 1982 Cadillac Coupe deVille with the 1st aluminum Caddy 4200 V8, had an "Instant Gas Mileage" display on the dash/center console (along with a fuel gauge and a speedometer/odometer). Read "0" when stopped, hit 40-50 mpg when coasting.

Probably the 1st really & truly computer-controlled GM vehcle. It was an optional engine, used in the Coupe and the Seville for one year as opposed to the 47X?+ cast iron V8. Same cooling system transmission, drive train, etc.

In 1983 they turned it sideways and it ( + the 4.5 & 4.9 varients) was the engine in all the FWD Caddys until the NorthStar. (Maybe there was a 4-cylinder GM compact "clone" in there somewhere?)

Got 22-25 mpg on regular (Unleaded!) around town, up to 30 on the highway @ 75+ with the cruise control.

Couldn't get out of its own way off the line.

My Brother still has it in Florida (no hills) and had all the suspension, body & paint work done, looks like a new car, still under 100K miles, great gas mileage, still SLOW!

Cheers!

ScanGauge II or UltraGauge. I have a SGII in the Cruze in addition to the instant FE display. It's a great tool for wringing MPG's out of a car. Customer support for the SGII is excellent.

but---it is fun to watch-who doesn't like seein 99 instant mpg when coasting down a long hill?

I have an '09 Traverse, and it also bugs me that it doesn't have an instant MPG.

You can always just clear the average, and right after that will be the instant.

I used to think that when folks on the Mopar minivan boards would complain that unless you got the top-line model with the EVIC display, all you saw was AVG MPG.

But then we got our Acura MDX and there is a fuel economy screen on the navigation system with a bar graph (0 to the left and 50 to the right) that swings instantaneously with your instant fuel economy. That really taught me how that particular car is to be driven for maximum economy.

And our Honda CR-V has the same type of bar graph (0 to the left and 60 to the right) in the MID between the tachometer and speedometer. I use it all the time; it gives instant feedback on how you are driving, and what works and what doesn't.

For example, the Acura's bar graph taught me that there was a huge difference between driving up to 45 mph and staying there (without TCC lock) and driving up to about 48 mph and staying there (with TCC lock). On a 45 mph road, and there are a lot of those around here, I can drive either speed safely and comfortably. But one speed delivers much better economy than the other speed. Stuff like that is much easier to perceive with an instantaneous reading.

Do you have the "info" buttons? If you see 3 buttons, one with a checkmark, than you can upgrade your display to read MPG's. All that is required is a calibration file for the cluster and BCM. The dealers are dumb in this area...I work with this stuff everyday at work - its my job. If you don't have the DIC buttons then you cannot do it w/o buying new parts.

Easy way would be a scan gauge or equivalent.

Where does one get this "calibration file?"

The dealership can request it thru the TIS system. They would request the file part number of the file that is used in models with the feature.

sciphi, do you get oil temp or pressure with the ScanGauge? Apparently it is available but not all cars are able to report it.
