About a month ago i got a new 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe v6 3.5
The car is beautiful and well made except the engine knocks very loud on the first start in the morning and if it sits a couple of hours it knocks then also, its so bad my 80 year old Mother asked me whats wrong with the motor (she heard the knock)
Of course she is our Accountant here in our engine shop...I have had other people drop in with their 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe's with the v6 3.5 asking us about the knocking noise in their cars and a whining noise they all seeem to have but i have no answers yet..I even tell them i am in the same boat..Actually the guys here make fun of it because it is my car!
When i first start it...it knocks for about 15-30 seconds sounds like a bearing and then quiets down but you can still hear something until it is hot...The oil light goes off immediatly so the oil pressure is there anyone else have this problem? car only has about 800 miles on it

THe Fram xtra guart (orange can) caused my Ford to knock at startup.Try a puro 'classic' oil filter. They have good flow .
Remember to clean the threads and baseplate on any oil filter and be certain the old filters gasket isn't stuck to the engine/

ticking, clunking, knocking, pinging, THAWAKING? That kinda noise are we talking about here. Have you tried an upgraded oil filter, or different oil?

tinmanSC no disrespect, crazyoildude is an engine builder I think he knows what a knock sounds like. It sounds to me like Hyundai might have some QC issues since this isn't the first complaint I've heard about their engines knocking. I'd bet a return trip to the dealer would say everything is just fine. It appears there might be a design issue with the engines in question. Time will tell. JMO

Yeah and it's not even just here. I keep reading elsewhere about the knocking 3.5L Santa Fe, the clunking, erratic shifting 6spd automatics they use in them and suspension clunks. It makes me want to hug the lowly antiquated 2.7L and F4A51 4spd auto in my 2008 Santy. It's quiet and super smooth as is the whole vehicle. It's just not as fuel efficient as the 3.5L/6spd combo.

Took delivery of mine on Aug 24th and my car was built on July 14th. I currently have 1200 Km and no knocking noise whatsoever. I park indoor at home and at work so I would have noticed easily if it did.

Only thing is that the fast idle upon startup is a bit too high at 1500 RPM+ so the car wants to take off a bit if you don't let it warm up a minute before putting it in gear.

This is likely the cause of the "engine surging" issues from what I understand of it.

is it the 4 or six cylinder
Have someone start it when the engine sits overnite and listen to the first few seconds under the hood..
I have heard this from a few other engine rebuilders that there is a problem with the 3.5 v6 in the 2010 santa fe
let me know what you find out...

I have the V6. Never heard anything after letting the car sit overnight, even indoor. If I need to open the hood and get my ears near the engine, it must be a very faint noise I don't know. I mean, any engine would make some noises when cold.

How much mileage do you have? When was your car built?

Open the hood and stand there while someone starts the car and you will hear a dull knocking noise..We heard it in 8 different engines there is a problem with those v6 engines it could just be a bad batch but there is definatly a problem..
I own a large engine rebuilding shop and all the guys agree..
Also i have had two people stop in complaining of the same noise wanting to know what it is and i just said join the club.
Our santa fe has under 800 miles now and noise was from the beginning

But at the beginning of the thread you mentionned that the noise is very loud so if mine would make it, I would definitely hear it, right?

When you heard it in the 8 other engines, did you have to open the hood th hear it? If so, it can't be loud enough for your mother to hear it?

I'll do the test very shortly.

Just did the test after work. The car had been sitting for 8 hours.

I was alone, so I openend the hood and started the engine standing outside and quickly moved to the underhood area. No noise, knocking or clatter discernible. I was parked indoor, there is good echo in there and there was no surrounding noise.

I don't have your experience and never opened an engine but can definitely recognize suspicious sounds coming from an engine bay.

What is Hyundai saying? Do you have your date of manufacture?

Hyundai says its normal and they started 4 other ones that did the exact same thing and i heard another 4 or 5 from other places, manufactures date is Jun 15 2010
The tech's at Hyundai (dealer) said they heard it and looked at each other and did not know what to say, they then said lets listen to some others and we did and all of them made the same noises give or take..My wife hears it and so does my 80 year old Mother (without me pointing it out)
I will go back to them in a few weeks and complain again and get then to do an oil change with my own 5w20...they said they use 10w30
I know that noise should not be there and my wife wont accept that either (she is a Lawyer) and said they will remedy that.Even if they say it is normal and i know its not that noise will effect resale value..
In my State the Lemon Law leans toward the consumer anyway..
If you hear anything at all on yours bring it in to the dealer and get a receipt just in case anything does go wrong later you have proof!
Let me know if you find anything
Talk to you soon
We like the santa fe i dont like the way the front end feels but....

I would definitely get a receipt from a dealer if I hear something not normal so they can't deny later.

I will be driving all the way down to Florida in a few days and back in 2 weeks.

how many miles on your santa fe?

Thanks.

I have 1300 Km (800 miles).

I scanned the web for reports of engine knocking but couldn't find any other than the ones pertaining to transmission issues and engine surging due to fast idle. Do you have any link I could check?
