Yes...trust me...the rings are seated.

RP seems to be the magic bullet here. I will keep this updated.

It in my mind is simply a case where "fact is stranger than fiction".

Hey Pete. I read though the VTec thread. I wonder why there are no follow up posts since Nov??? Please keep us up to date on your situation. Like I said, I just helped my daughter buy one of these VCM motors and I'll be checking the oil every time I see it.

Check the oil every 1,000 miles to get a feel for things. I was shocked to find my new car a quart low after 2,000 miles and then again and again. Only after going with RP 5W-20 does it seem like things are improving.

I am also going to give the engine a combustion chamber gasoline treatment (A/C Delco or Seafoam or Mopar etc.) at every oil change.

The main issue is the plugs and combustion chamber gets fouled. If I can solve the oil situation and keep the plugs and chamber clean I know I will be good to go.

FYI..it's a high compression engine and does much better on 91 octane..Honda says "at least 87 octane". Better mileage too.

After a year and about 12,500 miles my Nav system trip computer shows I am getting 22 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. So I can't complain as it's a 270 HP very spirited V-6.

I did learn today that oils with better NOAK Volatility Indexes are best for this engine. 20 WT oils have a lower volatility index...going to a PAO was a good choice for this reason?

If I get less oil use but still some I may go with RP 5w30 next time.

In Europe Honda V-6 Accords with the same VCM engines are getting a 5w30 oil. It's all about fleet averages in the US and a car company gets a "lot of mileage" off a low viscosity oil. Honda is now going to Conoco Phillips "Honda Brand semi-syn 0w-20 just to try to meet government objectives. Sometimes common sense is not so common. Make the oil thin as water and pull out the ZDDP. I think not. That's why I went to RP...SL oil and lots of moly and ZDDP. Proven..with a PAO base. Proven..Catalytic converter damage? Well if it uses oil guaranteed..and they are warrantied for life.

Time will tell and I will keep you posted.

RP 5w-20 was better than conventional or GRP.III Synthetis oil as consumption was cut 2/3.

Switched to Redline 5w30 for the fun of it. ABout equal to RP 5w-20.

I have concluded that a 5W-20 is just fine but to reduce consumption by 2/3 it needs to be a GRP. IV PAO or GRP V ester. My friend concurs.

Apparently the PAO's and Ester oils for a better seal around the rings and also less volatility.

A can of seafoam combustion cleaner every 7,500 to get the carbon out is also suggested.

I think that this is the best possible solution as Honda has had judgemnents against it regarding the VCM engine and if you do a dealership "oil study" and it consumes they must buy it back if you file with the BBB by law. Many attornies have numerous cases in progress. It's Honda's dirty little secret and possible a recall is coming.

The best car of the year for the past 17 year's is a lie now that Honda refuses to actually admit it is problematic "officially".

Honda has been legally advised to "ignore the issue at dealers" and tell customers that 1-2 quarts of consumption per 2,000 mies is normal.

I guess it's the old saying "buyers are liars and sellers are too.

Glad to see you are making some progress. Keep this thread alive with an occasional update as I am very interested in the solutions you develop through your experimentation and what you are hearing on this subject from other Honda owners. Our car has 1,000 miles on it now and, so far so good. Maybe those changes made for 2011 V6s did some good.

Be careful here though....It's very likely this 2011 specs an "SM" or even "SN" rated oil....so you could essentially be voiding that catalytic converer, engine, and emissions "warranty" as a whole....

Just a thought....but thanks for the info, glad to see RP "fixed" the problem....perhaps the extra detergency cleaned up something....? I'd give it 3-5k max with the RP, then go back to the regularly-spec'd oil per the owner's manual....and see if the consumption problem still exists.....
