Gang,

The OM calls for:

Front axle fluid (4X4):
  • 3.5 pints (1.8L)
  • Motorcraft SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant
  • Ford Specification WSP-M2C197-A

Rear 8.8/9.75 inch axle fluid:
  • 5.5 pints (2.6L)
  • Motorcraft SAE 75W-140 Rear Synthetic Axle Lubricant
  • Ford Specification WSL-M2C192-A

Does Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 meet the requirements for the front axle and does Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-140 meet the requirements for the rear axle?
I could not find any information on the Mobil 1 website relating to the Ford Specifications; note that I am under warranty and need to comply with them.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments. (PS - I chose M1 due to its availability, but I open to other suggestions--including MC).

Any full synthetic will work fine. Use 75w90 for the front diff and 75w140 for the rear diff. Dump the factory fill after a 10k run and the Mobil1 should be good for 30k-50k runs. I do recommend a yearly/15k cold check for gear oil level.

Footnote #3 on p. 404 of 2010 F150 Owners Manual, says XL-3 needed for rear differential.

I should have read the next line; thanks Mod!

You shouldn't have e-diffs on a FX4,those only came on the Raptor according to our parts lookups, unless they were added post factory. You might have the shift on the fly t-case, but those used vacuum regulators on the front hubs, replaced a ton of those.

The PVH system was discontinued in 2000.5 and they went to a live axle setup since then... Now, 4x4 systems for the Ranger all axles spin all the time, the only thing to engage is the transfer case...which is electronic shifted. I bet that's what is getting the OP.

Electronic shift shouldn't matter in terms of what fluid to use. Use the fluids you asked about and you should be golden.

Im not trying to argue, but Ive sold a ton of vacuum actuators on 04+ F150s.

I missed the F150 part. I guess that makes sense...

While I cannot speak to other models, my 2010 FX4 does have e-diffs (unless I am totally misunderstanding the technology) and they were not added post factory. As seen on page 307 of the 2010 Ford Owner's Manual:

Activating the electronic locking differential (ELD)
The ELD can be turned on by pulling the knob on the 4WD control toward you while the control is in either 4H (4X4 High) or 4L (4X4 Low) mode.

My truck definitely has this feature.

From the sounds of it, you have the rear e-diff which is common enough. It is an LSD during normal use and a e-locker when you pull the knob. I wish that more vehicles came with that feature. It is not a Raptor only option.

Don't forget the transfer case fluid too.
