Just for fun, I called the Ford dealership on when Ford requires on transmission fluid change on a 2010 2wd truck....they said wait till it reaches 170,000 miles because that's what the manual says,,,I'm thinking,, that couldn't be right, but the service writer was going by the book.

Cost to do the service is $260 bucks + tax...

NOte- the truck is 8 years old with 67,000 miles

what do u all think, change it or wait---- Im thinking change it..

Change it and take a sample for UOA! Different vehicle and fluid but my mom's new used car had fried "lifetime" fluid at 86k miles. Don't wait until your transmission is getting chewed up by evil-smelling black sludge. Depending on use it may not even make it to 170k on factory fill.

If my quick search is accurate, there isn't a normal dipstick accessible from the top. There's apparently one attached to the fill plug. A pump to fill it from below or a long hose, funnel, and a buddy to pour it up top are required in that case. Still sounds plenty doable if you have a few hours. Unit calls for Mercon LV, so Maxlife is a good option.

Maybe do a drain and fill and change filter, drive a few hundred miles, drain and fill again, drive a few hundred, drain and fill again. Do this every 30k to 50k (or at the interval recommended by the oil analysis) and something else on the truck will probably kill it before the transmission dies.

My current and previous truck both have the same 6R80 transmission. Change it. I change it every 60k miles. Use Mercon LV.

Most are filled for life now along with the rear axle. I change my fleets trans and axles with synthetic at 60k. Most trans repair shops will recommend 30k (severe service schedule regardless of how you drive).

It's not that hard to drain and fill. There is a youbube video outlining the process.
