Im rounding 5k on a new 2010 Equinox and was looking for some advise on a oil/filter combo. I do a lot of highway driving and mostly leave it in "Eco" mode. I have no problem putting in the best, im just not to sure what the best is in my case. Thats why I came to talk to the experts

Thanks for any input

Its engine is also DI (like its sister the Traverse). You might want to do a search in the UOA section for Traverse/Acadia/Outlook/Enclave. (I dont believe I have seen any UOAs for the Equinox). Anyways we have seen very few good UOAs on any of the Lambda engines (DI or not). Many of us have been using the OEM Delco filter but I have seen an M1 filter used as well.

FWIW I replaced the run of fall/winter oil with GC thinking that a more robust offering might yield better wear #s.

Does this engine have a spin on or cartridge filter? I thought it used the same setup as the ecotec variants.

Ive had very good luck with M1 0w-40 in my ecotec block turbo saab, at extended OCIs. I use he saab filter, which is a Hengst Energetic cartridge.

You may want to look into those options - not saying it is the same, and UOA is your friend here... But ive been happy with those.

Id also buy a magnetic-tipped drain plug...

It one of the cartridge types (ecotec). The problem with this vehicle is that its so new that UOA's are hard to come by. There are plenty of 2.4's but none running quite the same set up (and pushing that much weight) where I would consider them equivalent. I was thinking either Amsoil, Ultra, or RP (all in 5w30)

Are you planning on doing extended OCI 7-10K? with a synthetic? if not I would start with Mobil Clean 7500 and the factory filter and keep the OCI in the 5K-7K range.

The vehicle specs 5w30?,what is factory recommended OCI does it say use the OLM???????

Yes the vehicle specs 5w30, it has an OLM which is currently registering just under 50% life. I plan on switching over to synthetic when it hits 25%.

Any synthetic M1 or PP will work fine and handle your OLM mileage, plus there easly found at your local WM,could try a yellow P1,WIX,NAPA Gold,CQ Red just to name a few all good filters, the P1 will have a better filtration spec vs the others.

if going with M1 i recommend there 0w30 AFE.

I e-mailed Mobil's customer service since my wife and I are strongly considering an Equinox for our next vehicle that needs to carry future baby and dog. Dog is here, baby is about 12 months away.

The Mobil tech recommended the Truck & SUV variety of 5w30 or regular Mobil 1 5w30 while the vehicle is under warranty. He said that the EP could also be used but to follow the OLM during the warranty period.

Yea TSUV would be a good choice too as would 5w30HM,i would pass on the regular M1 5w30.

and you should always follow the OLM even out of warranty

Go ahead and use any GM 6094 5W30 but be sure to UOA it to see how it holds up in this GM DI engine and also to see the accuracy of the OLM.

But be aware that it has been the experience of Lambda owners that the GM 3.6L DI engine is hard on oil for several reasons (e.g. fuel dilution). So there probably is good reason to think that this will be the case for the GM Equinox DI engine.

MC 7500 is the better perfoming Mobil 5w-30 and would have less bad effect from ethanol dilution than their other semi synthetic: M1 5w-30. IDk if I would run the highly FM, high PAO 0W this soon.

I am doing this (GC 0W30) for my GM DI engine because I have done multiple UOAs on it for a synthetic 5W30 and I am hoping that this engine can do better re wear #s.

As I suggested the OP must do a UOA(s) to see if a 'traditional' 5W30 synthetic does well in this DI application.

Great thread. I'm picking up a 2010 Equinox on Wednesday. I had heard the DI engines were a little tougher on oil, and some are suffering buildup on the intake valves from oil vapor in the PCV system. I was thinking about GC for a change when it's time. Seems like a good fit. While the older EcoTec's are easy on oil, this one should be interesting.
And the baby is 12 months away? That man is just thinkin' with his dipstick!

I really love the Equinox/Terrain. I almost pulled the trigger on one, but ended up getting a really good deal on a used truck from my company so I decided to save a little money!

They really are sharp vehicles inside and out!

I actually did OK on the deal. I got supplier pricing, and my trade is worth 1500 more this year than last. I guess the market for used SUV's recovered some. Lovely spouse and I have looked at the Equinox/Terrain for a while now. The planets aligned, and we bought it. The Chevy is "cute" (wife quote) while the GMC is more aggessive looking. There is a lot of buzz about DI engines on the web. I've got a little time to find the right choice for oil. I'm going to quiz the service department when I pick it up, and see what they say about the DI engines they have seen. Someone must have one with a lot of miles on it by now, especially in the Acadia/Traverse platform. Marketing is a funny thing. The web buzz is that the Enclave gets M1 as a FF, and a sticker on the 710 cap while the Traverse gets conventional, and a generic 5w30 cap. I'm leaning toward GC for it, based on UOA, and the fact I have a boatload of Green stashed.

As far as I have read *none* of the Lambda platform vehicles get M1 as the FF and there is no M1 sticker on any of the fill caps.

I disagree. My wife and I also have a 2010 Equinox with DI 2.4 ecotec. I plan on running regular Mobil 1 5w30 because it meets Honda's HTO-06 spec. I believe it is important to use an oil that meets this spec.

If your not familiar with this spec, it relates to an oil's ability to resist high temperature deposits. Not sure how much NOACK plays a role in this characteristic.

I have no idea how the DI Ecotec engine compares to the DI 3.6L Lambda engine but there have been enough UOAs of the 3.6 using M1 5W30 to lead me to believe that one can do better using something other than M1 5W30.

If you are concerned that your oil meet HTO-06 (and GM 4718) I would use PP 5W30 or its prettier sister oil PUltra 5W30.
