we just purchased one of these. it has a 6 speed automatic.

are there any toyota guys (or girls) here that can give me some insight on maintenece for this transmission.

the engine is the I4 179hp

thanks.

It'll take the Toyota WS ATF, which is pretty thin and a universal ATF really won't work for it. If it were mine, I'd probably drain and refill 4 quarts every 30,000 miles, though that's on the conservative side obviously. I assume it doesn't have a dipstick for the ATF?

Other than that, not much to it.

I agree with the 30k change interval, although if you rack up alot of miles quickly you could probably change it at 50k and be good . there is nothing wrong with the toyota ws fluid but for the same money I would use Amsoil's light viscosity ATF with the product code "ATL"

I would recommend a drain and fill as others have indicated although I would drain every 15K as WS tends to shear fairly quick, even with normal use. It's really not that great of an ATF as some blindly believe. My point is that there are other real synthetic options to WS that will last longer and protect better.

Redline D6 or Amsoil ATL are choices once out of the warranty period just in case you are concerned about that issue.

He can't use the Amsoil ATF for two reasons, one it's probably too thick and two it will violate his warranty.

So, if it were mine it would get the WS at 30,000 and at 60,000 when the warranty expired I'd look at what else is available. But it would be the Amsoil ATL, not ATF.

A drain/refill every 15k or flush every 30k.

If you want to go any longer, an inline filter to catch all the wear and tear would be smart.

Amsoil ATL, Redline D6, Amalie Synthetic....are some other ATF options.

You don't have to wait for the warranty to expire to use another ATF.

The Camry is very easy to do a cooler line flush on. I have an 08 Lexus ES350 (V6) which is the same platform. If you don't have a dipstick you will need an infrared thermometer to check the pan temp to check the fluid level. Not difficult to do though.

If it has the dip/fluid level tube in the drain plug then you will have to do a cooler line flush as only 1 quart will come out when you pull the drain plug.

I would only recommend you use WS fluid until your warranty is up. Plus, dealers will tell you it is a lifetime fill. I did a flush at 50,000 miles and the fluid was dirty but not burnt. 50k is one half of the factory OCI for the WS fluid. You should be able to price shop for ATF at dealers if you buy a case of 12 quarts. I get it here for $6.60/qt.

I found a Camry factory service manual on CD rom on ebay for $20 which spells out all the procedures. You may want to look there for one that is compatible with your year/trans/engine.

Once flushed the trans shifted crisp for a day and now it shifts like brand new. Make certain you get all the correct crush washers for the drain & fill bolts.
