Possibly. I think 507.00 is slightly lower SAPS than CJ-4, but I haven't looked real hard at it.

But one would be risking a warranty coverage denial with VW if the oil didn't specifically carry a 507.00 approval on the label. Is it worth the fight to prove that a non-507.00 labeled HDEO was just as good?

The dollar-wise move is to just use an approved 507.00 oil until the warranty runs.

I'm sure some of the more pedestrian diesel oils will catch a 507.00 approval soon enough. Then it's moot.

A few years ago, Schaeffer 7000 bottle labels stated that the oil exceeded all foreign manufacturer's specifications without further specifics. I found that very interesting at the time.

Congrats! Sorry I missed this post earlier. Nice color combo.

If you haven't seen it yet, here is a good post on TDI breakin

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=48940&highlight=breakin

Also one thing I was unaware of on my DSG (gas car) is that it adapts to how you drive. So for example if you baby it on breakin it thinks you want to drive like a grandma and can be a little slower off the line than when you first got it. I noticed that a longish highway drive made it relearn to normal again (I tested this out twice).

This is only noticable during breakin when your driving habits are probably different than normal (if you baby it I mean). When you start driving the car normally it is not noticeable. Just wanted you to know because I was unaware of it.

How do you like the DSG so far? What is your favorite mode to drive in? Currently my favorite is to shift with the console shifter. It feels like you are more involved and sort of feels like an f1 or touring car racer.

My wife and I really like VW's....In particular the Rabbit and Jetta......They just seem real solid and the interior is outstanding...
I test drove the gasoline Jetta and my wife drove the Rabbit...Out of all the cars we've been comparing the Rabbit and Jetta are our favorites...

Now I hear about the TDI....The gas mileage is really appealing.

Well, our JSW is for my wife, so I drive it only once or twice a month. The wife loves it and the few times I drive it, it is fun and peppy and a miser all at the same time. Can't say I'd pick it over a Volvo on a long road trip, but it is pleasant in its own Teutonic way. Solid and competent, and zero problems so far.

Overall, the DSG is very good in ours. It can get slightly confused in some low speed decel/coast situations. Nothing significant, and overall it is a terrific gear box. Shifts are instant. Our DSG will fully engage and creep the car just slightly at idle, which I understand some earlier versions did not. We drive in standard mode, as it gets the best mileage and feels more relaxed about it.

According to VW, the break in for the first 600 should be mild. With the DSG, even in sport it is hard to beat on the engine. The more important step seems to be to leave the factory fill in for at least 5k. Perhaps the increasing microabrasives aid in final seating. We've had zero consumption and the car revs very easily, takes off when you step on it, and will burn rubber if you jump on it.

The mileage has been very good, and is improving with every tank. Wards seems to like this engine; it made the ten best list for '09.

Of course, we ordered it when fuel was over $4, and now that we have it, fuel is down to $1.65. Still, I'm sure that will eventually change. And it is nice to have a 500+ mile tank range.

FWIW . . . CR is also gushing all over the '09 TDI, picking it over the Prius and all but one other car among family sedans.

A "near bull's eye" is their tagline.

Not that this is a reason to buy one.
But I guess it's better than CR panning it.
And its not yet a recommended model.

I noticed the TDI has been getting lots of nice reviews...I wouldn't be surprised to see it make their list soon...

I've been reading up on it and alot of TDI owners report the gas mileage improves quite a bit once you get some miles on them..

In one review the test editor did a highway mpg test on the 2009 TDI and with cruise control got 55 mpg!

"best was a highway run with the cruise set at 67, where I averaged 55 MPG. Even without cruise, most of my highway drives averaged 48 MPG or better."

Take a look at my 2008 rabbit FF over in the UOA section. We "broke it in" by the book.

I would rethink the 5000 mile OCI on the first one if I did it again... Nothing special in the oil and fairly high wear rates. Not that it is necessarily a bad thing to see high Fe, but the oil just wasnt anything great.

I just got a shipment of gallons of 9000 5w-40, and it states right on the sticker that it mets VW 502 and 505 specs.

Ok, I'm not great at posting photos, but here's a pix of our JSW TDI:

See my comments above in this thread.

Presently up to about 3,000 miles.

Sharp car,
My buddy got the gas version in black this summer. They do look expensive/impressive. I'm glad these are out now, hopefully the old TDI's will lose some value and maybe I can get one.

Looks real nice. Thanks for the engine compartment pic. Seems like it's getting more common to put the battery in its own little covered compartment.

Bah. I don't. Although we're going to try to keep her Beetle (see sig) a long time. It gets 50+ MPG on the interstate, around 42 or 43 in town/suburb commute. The significant thing about the new common rail engine in the 2009's is the extra power (quite a bit extra... a lot) and the 50 state US legal emissions (CleanDiesel).

For winter her Beetle only likes Stanadyne, Power Service not so much... to the point that my nickname for Power Service is Power Robber-- noticeable difference. Curiously, it makes better power running on untreated diesel (no Stanadyne added), you can notice a very slight reduction in power on Stanadyne treated fuel, and a little worse yet on Power Service. I think it has to do with how VW has the injection timing set or something. But I'm too chicken of cloud point (gelling) in cold temps to not put in the Stanadyne. She actually adds it, not me. Her car.

I will say this, though, in favor of the VW TDI: Last week it got down to -4 F here, but the TDI fired right up that morning, started it myself because I was curious how long it would run the glow plugs in pre-glow prior to cranking. The glow plug light on the dash stayed lit maybe 5 seconds, cranked pretty slow but fired off with a healthy puff of white smoke (normal for cold diesel engine) clattered and rattled a bit for the first minute or so and smoothed right out. Still on the OE battery.
