2009 RAV4 Oil Consumption

Have you verified its the coupling? I had an 11 AWD Rav4 with the 2.5, which had blown out endlinks in the rear around 105k miles.

I got top dollar when I traded mine in a few years back.

I assume the humming is the coupling, but it is very slight, mostly noticeable from 25-35 MPH. It is most likely the coupling, but it still could be a wheel bearing. I was going to wait to see what happens with the oil. If the consumption reduces with the PCV valve, then I'll consider forking over the $100 to the dealer for diagnosis to see if it is the coupling, and if Toyota is in the mood for some goodwill. If not, we may just run it as is for another year or so then get rid of it. I'm sure it can hum for quite some time. If it gets bad, I'll just pull the driveshaft and rear axles to disable the 4WD--a free fix!

I have a feeling that very soon many people here will relate to this comment...

That's why I stick with Synthetic oils for a 5k OCI.

Update: I changed the PCV valve and the consumption didn't change much. In the last 3100 miles the oil has dropped from the top mark on the dipstick almost to the lower mark, which is nearly a quart. So it must either be engine wear, or gummed up rings causing it. However, 1 qt in 3000 miles isn't too bad, especially for an engine with 160K on the clock. For now I'm not going to do anything else.

Next time it runs low on oil - add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. Helped me many times. In one of my cars it reduced oil consumption from 1qt per 100 miles to 1qt per 5000 miles. Vehicle was 2006 Pontiac Vibe AWD with 90k miles at the time.

There was a recall on that engine. It looses oil. Dealer and Toyota know about it. My 2007 Rav4 went to dealer. They topped it off and put a yellow mark on the oil cap. After 1000 miles they checked and it was down 1 qt. They rebuilt the engine. It's a known problem. Good time to replace the water pump since engine is rebuilt. Good luck.

A TSB, not technically a recall, because it was not a safety issue they were required to fix.

This is not correct information. The oil use issue was exclusively on the 2.4 2AZ engine installed in RAV4s through 2008. 2009 and newer had the 2AR 2.5l engine, which is not known to have widespread oil use issues.

^Correct. 2.5 was not affected.
