RWD, 375 HP V8 and 6-speed auto. Looks like a BMW 7.

Bad news for the Big 3. Would nothing stop this automaker?

$35,000 looks to be the price range for the V8, the V6 models will start under $30,000.

Hyundai makes nice equipment but they have a big problem with their dealer network. As well, the initial quality has shown well but past three years they are still in the dumper.

I want to jump on that bandwagon but the problems with Hyundai are the same reasons I won't buy a Mitsubishi or a Chrysler product. In my experience, lousy dealers and products that just don't seem to hold up all that well. I know it's a blanket statement, but it is my experience.

Not for the Big 3, but bad news for Acura. Acura is going to be history very, very soon at this rate.

Mgregoir,I agree I will never buy another chrysler product, probably in our life time they will join Studibaker,Packerd,Oldsmobile.

Well, Honda is making money off Acura. The Big Three has been losing.
I would take this over a 300 HEMI in a heart beat.
Maybe GM's Aussie imported G8 has a chance against this?
Don't get me started with Ford. The Crown Vic?

The engineering in that thing is older than me.

Mgregoir:

I'd agree with your last comment if it were the 2004 and prior model years. But even I, a harsh critic of a lack of quality and dealer support/service amongst numerous carmakers, would seriously give this new model a real audition as something to replace my '01 I30. After the first model year, of course!

The Critic:

I thought I recalled you saying you hosted an Acura board somewhere online? If so, you've got alot more insight than I've gleaned from AutoWeek, Car and Driver, and Road and Track. Rumor has it that the 2009 TL was to be completely "re-done," as was the RL.(?)

Not for long. Sales have been dismal lately, especially the RL.

The reason that I am cautious of Hyundai and Mitsubishi (and even Honda) are their automatic transmissions which don't seem as strong as the rest of the vehicle.

WAIT A MINUTE!

I just noticed the center console! Is that a knock-off of Bimmer's "I-drive" and/or Audi's "MM-whatever?"

spm:

You gotta change that SP III out with Amsoil or Schaeffer's ATF!

Someone will chime in, however, and say that, "just as with Honda's trannies, no amount of high quality fluid is going to overcome basic bad engineering."

I hadn't heard of Hyundai trannies being problematic. What year and model?

The transmissions in this are made by Aisin and ZF.

You might know them from...pretty much every Toyota, Dodge's heavy duty trucks, a whole bunch of Mercedes and BMW models among others...

I have a couple of friends that have put 7 years/150k miles on a Hyundai/Kia product with virtually no problems.

I moderate the largest Acura forum online. The 2009 RL received a mid-model cycle change, but many of us do not think that it will be enough to make the RL competitive with the class leaders. Details of the 2009 TSX were recently leaked out, and it was a huge disappointment. We'll find out soon about the TL, but I really don't think that the new powertrain will put out over 300HP as some members would like while maintaining competitive fuel economy.

At least their factory remanufactured units are cheap. They cost about 1/3 less than what it costs for most brands.

Hyundai uses a chemical tracer in their fluid. Before approving any transmission warranty claim, they test the fluid for that identifier. They are the only OEM that I know of that does this.

Aisin and ZF?

Both of these companies are great for making cutting-edge transmissions, but the reliability seems to be a hit or miss.

I think Hyundai are going to learn the same lesson VW learned with their Phaeton: Customers who want luxury also want the status of a luxury brand and the high-end dealer experience. But I can see the Genesis giving domestics another deserved headache. No threat to Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, M-B, BMW, etc.

Good point. There is no "name recognition" for hyundai, and the whole luxury market is all about superficial name association.

I think that the new division from Hyundai is going to OHHHH customers. Price & quality is going to play a large part in this. Or maybe I should say...Quality for the price. I agree with The Critic that Acura need to do something with their product line as being even more competative in their class. Acura needs to be at the top of their class in all areas and with all models rather than just being competative. Lexus' still OHHHH their customers after a test drive or even long term ownership even if their vehicles arn't sporty. It's the smell, feel and the way the interiors relaxes you after you've entered the car after a long stressful day. Hyundai's luxury division is going to do that an more for less.

I also understand from talking to a Hyundai sales rep here in my home town that, Hyundai is going to loose the Azera Sedan to the new division as their entry level vehicle. Or maybe the Azera is going to be rebadged also as a Genesis. He also told me that there is some uncertainty wheather "Genesis" is going to be the name of a model or the name of the division.
