hey i just got a 09 accord with the v6 in it. i was wondering when to change the oil for the first time and when to go to synthetic? does the factory fill have special additives in it? what oil would be good it sees mostly short trips .

What I would do: Change the oil at 3,000 miles with a conventional or synthetic of your choice.

I have heard that Honda is one of the few auto companies that insists you keep you factory fill in the crankcase until it is time to change it per manual or OLM.

Honda Accord specifies 5W-20 conventional, but 0W-20 is acceptable (so is synthetic).

+1 Yes, it's OLM'd and Honda suggests keeping it in there until the OLM triggers.

+2 true. Honda puts anti-wear assembly fluids in at the factory and wants them in there for the first OCI.

+1

I changed my factory fill out at obut 4,500 miles when the maintenance minder was at around 50% (I do alot of highway driving).

Synthetic is optional but I use it because my OCI's per the maintenance minder are around 10k.

Good luck with your new car!

I asked a couple Honda Dealers and got different responses so I called several different dealers and the majority I talked to recommended changing the oil at 5000 miles no matter what the Maintenance Minder said including the factory fill so that is what I did and continue to do. I use conventional oil and while the factory fill might be robust enough to go 7 or 8 or more thousand miles before changing I am not going to go that far on conventional unless I am doing used oil analysis and even than that is stretching it in my mind on conventional oil. I don!t understand why Honda Corporation does not get all the dealers on the same page as far as the time to change oil and I don!t know how they can be comfortable with people going 7 or 8 thousand on conventional oil. That is about where I would be if I let the MM run all the way down to where they say. I suppose dealer recommendaions could also vary according to the area you live in based on weather conditions.

Dealers want you to change oil more often to make $ from you. Honda company's interest is different, they care about their reputation and they tested engine performance and reliability very carefully, and decided that their OLM with conventional oil is more than adequate in term of engine protection.

I trust Honda engineer's decision rather dealer's profit.

My brother changed the oil on his 2008 Honda Accord Coupe 5spd with the 4-cyl 2.4L at 5,000 miles. He then changed it another 5,000 miles after that and now goes by the OLM which is ~10,000 miles or so.

The dealership he goes to uses Honda oil (Exxon-Superflo/Mobil Drive Clean) and a Honda oil filter.

I'd go 5k miles and then change out the factory fill. In my humble opinion, the best synthetic oil per-dollar value right now would be Pennzoil Platinum. That oil would do you fine for short trips or any other situation you may encounter. Whatever weight Honda specifies to use, I'd stay with it. Either use a Purolator PureOne filter or a Honda labeled one. Then either stick with the OLM for future changes or change oil/filter at 5k intervals. Doing that, and changing out brake, coolant, and transmission fluid every two years and it should last a VERY long time.

I am curious as to why so many of you insist on changing the FF within a prescribed mileage usually early as opposed to following the MM and what the owner's manual states? I have yet to hear one compelling reason as to why this should be done.

The way I look at it is: unless a used oil analysis is done on a FF, I would think the engineers at Honda know what they are doing when they say only change the FF when the MM triggers the 15% or less warning at startup.

I agree with what you're saying sir1900, I see no reason to change the FF out early. The idea I get, is some people are concerned with break-in metals doing harm to the engine.

The filters don't catch everything. Faced with a choice, less hard metal particles in the oil or more, it seems logical to choose less.

The factory fill is fine to leave in per the exact Honda specification. But, this is a sight for those that offer alternatives and options to what a given manufacturer suggests/advises. In times past if a consumer was to follow what the auto maker suggested in the manual, a somewhat less than ideal maintenance schedule would have been followed. Today, due to warranty issues, consumer laws, and specific automotive requirements, the auto makers give much more detailed and careful instructions for the care of the vehicle they sell.
That said....individuals may have ideas and opinions that differ...while still not voiding the warranty. In my opinion, leaving the factory fill in a new Honda for 5k miles is a sort of compromise for those that cringe at leaving any factory oil in for over 500 miles....and for those (including the manufacturer) that just do whatever the manual says (if even that much). From the miniscule amount of research I've done about the subject, at 5k miles the need for any longer time or mileage needed to properly break-in the engine is zero. I see no harm, nor any second-hand evidence of harm done when changing the FF out at 5k. I also figure that if Honda was honestly worried about the consumer changing his oil out at 5k, they would have stated that it would void the warranty. Being that they did not, and by still giving Honda engineers the respect they've earned, I say 5k is a sound choice.
One thing to also keep in mind is that most manuals, OLM's, and factory maintenance schedules are designed to keep things simple and easy for less-than-superior minded car buyers.

why not drain early and fill up with redline for the first fill then switch to what ever you want when your maintenence minder tell you tooo???

I heard the redline stuff has a similar makeup of whats in the factory fill...(ya I aint too scientific...not a hard core oil nerd)

Honda factory fills in the used oil analysis section seem to be conventional oil with a healthy dose of moly. Popular opinion is that it's a plain old dino with moly from the assembly lube. The factory-installed Toyo Roki/Filtec oil filter does a good job, so I don't see a reason (in hindsight) to dump the factory fill before the maintenance minder tells you to.

OTOH, I dumped the FF early, ran Pennzoil conventional until 6,000 miles, and have used synthetic since. I don't think my Honda cares.

For short trips look for an oil with good flow properties before it hits operating temp. Any conventional SM/GF-4 5w-20 will fit the bill. If you want the absolute best cold flow, look at a synthetic oil.

$30,000 for brand new Accord V6

$20 for unneccessary oil change

Unable to read the Owner's Manual, priceless.
