VW 502 oils do not have be fully synthetic oils anymore. The spec is about the oil's performance and not about its pedigree. Back before VW502, only fully synthetic oil could meet VW 500.00.

VW: NA Approved Oils

Browsing through the list, I see only a handful of oils that are anywhere near common in the US that meet VW 502 spec and they are....Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Castrol Syntec and Kendall Synthetic. Those are the only oils I see that are readily available here in the states and all are synthetic.

Where are the conventional oils on there?

I notice that approval list is four years old. I wonder if there is an updated list.

My wife and I just bought an 09' Rabbit...Not alot of oils to choose from here in the U.S...The only oil we've seen on the local shelves for the recommended 5W40 weight that meets the VW 502 spec is Castrol 5W40...I guess we'll just go with that or order something else online.

Yes, the Syntec 5w-40 is one of the more readily available 502 oils. I look for sales at Autozone or Advance Auto then pick some up. Just got some at Advance, with a Mobil 1 filter, for $28, not bad. It's a fine oil.

The Mobil 0w-40 is another popular one; you can get it at Wal-Mart, among other places, I think.

How many quarts did you get ? Does the Passat use a cartridge type filter as well ?

Here is a list from 2007, here

You can compare my 2.5l UOA if you'd like, UOA . First is the factory fill, second is a run of Maxlife 5w30 A3 rated(RIP

No, the 1.8 in my Passat does not use a cartridge filter. The sales usually include five quarts plus a filter. My engine holds about 4.25 quarts, and uses a little bit between oil changes, so the deal works out well for me. I'm not sure if you could get a cartridge filter in one of these sales or not.

Good data to compare. Yours was a bit better than ours, but it is very similar for the most part - so that is reassuring.

Thanks!

Just got back from Wal-Mart and there wasn't a single bottle of Synthetic with a 502 rating.

Next, I went by Checkers and they only had one brand....Mobil 1 0w40 European Car for $6.99 a quart...YUK! Suppose I will have to watch the sales.

We're just all schaeffers 5w-40 synthetic. It claims to be VW approved for 502, or at least will meet it...

I use it in the diesels, in my BMW, and will in my saab as well. Makes things easy, and makes it easier to get free shipping from schaeffer's.
