Not much. It's just "neat", which to be honest is about 50% of the reason for any engine swap.

yes...but the 1.8 (in the Astra) has a belt.

Much better fuel economy in the right application. I did some driving around the city tonight, and averaged 38 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. No way a 2.2 Ecotec could have come anywhere near that. Tomorrow when I hit the highways for work it'll likely average 44-45 mpg, and get me up some steep hills effortlessly and quietly. Having a table-flat torque curve starting at 1800 RPM is nice like that.

A 1.4T in the Astra would remove the torque deficit. Tune it, and it would be downright quick.
