my mom drives an accord, bought new, and has since put about 30,000 miles on it. the oil has been changed by the dealer every single time(when the olm goes down to 15%). she works at the local junior high no more than a mile away, goes there, and comes home in the afternoon. so it sees an average of 10 miles a week of extremely short trips on the weekdays. and she'll go to wal mart a few times a month which is 7 miles from the house. the longest trips it sees (rarely) is when she goes to new orleans, about a 180 mile round trip drive, and houma, which is a 45 mile drive. being she does mostly short trip driving, should her oil be changed more often and not according to the olm?

The OLM should factor these driving conditions into it's recommendation. Honda states to change by OLM or every 1 year, whichever comes first. So as long as she isn't exceeding 1 year between changes it should be fine.

If you really want to know, sample it and get a used oil analysis. I haven't seen that Honda OLMs are super sensitive to this kind of driving. It may be that once per year is enough to cover this but it may also be that she's driving around for long periods of time with excessive fuel in the oil and all of the associated complications that this can cause.

If it is a the V6 I would have it changed more often. They are prone to fuel dilution for some reason. Do you live close enough to change it for her? I would do it at least every 6mo.

yeah i live about 25 miles away from her, its no problem for me to change it. but everytime i offer she refuses and my dad says just let her bring it to the dealer(he does not want to hear her complain lol). its taking about 5-7k miles for it to reach 15% on the olm.

She is fine. No need to change anything. Just make sure the dealer is changing the filter every oil change, not every other change.
