2008 Ford Escape 4 cyl driven w/o oil in it

Its already voided. They are not going to warranty a road hazard knocking a hole in the engine for one, and two, someone driving without oil for several miles is also not a warrantable condition.

It would be appropriate to make "Einstein" pay for the repairs so Einstein understands that actions like that have consequences.

Maybe Einstein will learn not to drive over road hazards that are big enough to cause significant damage to a vehicle.

I don't think I can really agree with this. First of all, it's entirely possible that the road hazard was not something clearly obvious, and not something most reasonable people would go out of their way to avoid. Road construction can produce some rather impressive bumps and dips, as well as potholes that can kick up chunks of roadway.

We don't know the full story, and you are assuming that the situation is being caused by stupidity. That being said, it's certainly possible it could have been avoided. But is it a reasonable expectation?

Let's face it, 98% of the population knows ZERO about cars, and don't realize that the oil warning light coming on means STOP. It's like the "Check engine soon" light. Take it home to dad, or the husband, or the boyfriend and have them take care of it. They have no way of knowing that continuing to drive means the engine is going to explode. It's still running, right? Most people without a working knowledge of engins are going to keep going.

Not to say they shouldn't take responsibility for it, but acting like "It's ALL THEIR FAULT!!!!!!!!" is a little extreme, unless the story is

"They intentionally ran over a huge [censored] pothole and rock and kept driving knowing all the oil was coming out of the engine"

Let us know how this turns out - I'm in the camp of fill it with some kind of 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil, run for 500 miles, and change again with same, and see how it goes.

Engine will most likely run just fine, BUT, it will consume a lot more oil now - keep a close eye on the oil level.

Area of road work, some kind of chunk of concrete possible fragment of a culvert. Bottom of front body fascia torn up and major dent in cross member under radiator which may be what caused it to kick up and strike the filter and dip tube flange? Who knows. Driving too fast and not paying attention. He thought it wouldn't be that bad and could make it the short way home without harm. He's a student who also may be getting deployed to Afghanistan in 2012 and as such the car will be stored during that time anyhow. He's quite sick over the situation. Financial responsibility for it is understood.

Powertrain warranty already expired, it has over 60K miles.

On a side note the location of the filters on those cars is stupid. Everything that uses the FL910s that hangs down runs the risk of it being ripped off. I know the FL910S is shorter, but I have personally seen this happen numerous times. Even people just hitting those concrete parking stops at the right angle will rip the oil filter off.

This isn't directed at Lonestar's "Einstein" but I don't know how many times I've told people to not keep driving and running an engine when it's hot and to shut down immediately if the oil light comes on (or change the oil, belts, hoses etc). But they keep on driving anyway if it ever does happen, especially if it's not their car. It's just common sense and a normal reaction to check your guages and listen for abnormal noises after an impact, and most of the time they do the see gauges' warnings and ignore it. You can only lead a horse to water..

2nd start-up. First start up it had some initial lifter clatter that cleared once they pumped up with the new oil.

Start-up video

Seemed to drive as normal. Seemed. Time will tell. Not making any assumptions too soon.

Good!

Now NEVER LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN!!!

I will have to keep this Ford Escape in mind now. I will re-read the year. Thanks!

Is it just me, or can anyone else hear knocking noises? I have a 2.3l Duratec in my Focus, and it doesn't make any knocking noises.
From 5-15 seconds and 24-34 seconds the noise is the loudest. Hopefully its just my ears playing tricks on me...

I heard that, yes, but he also said it went away. He was also revving a cold engine.

I think if the motor was toast it would have sounded a LOT worse.

Hopefully going thinner or thicker on oil will eliminate the newfound lifter tick.

I also hope he does not have milkshake oil, and maybe even do a 1500 mile OCI with Supertech. As i said, MAYBE going one grade up.

That engine took a beating but it definitely cranks/runs. I am impressed!

Duratecs are known for having noisy injector pulses, just as the previous Zetec engines were. My wife's Fusion actually has an 'insulating' wrap over the fuel rail, unlike my Focus, and her car is quieter.

Anyway, to the OP, you're fortunate that your motor is still running strong. Over the spring, my father-in-law had a rock shear a hole in the oil pan of his 1.8T Audi. He tried to drive it a mile or so, and the motor was completely shot. Car was totaled because of engine damage... Could've just been a freak thing though, and who knows how fast he lost all of the oil compared to your situation. Anyway, the OP's story just gives me confidence that our 2 Duratecs will run strong for years to come!

I agree that they hang down, but IMO this doesn't usually cause a problem. Both of our cars use this filter, and the bumpers still hang lower than the filter. I've measured for FL-400s clearance on my Focus (bigger version of the 910) and it still had room. Not that they can't somehow be ripped off, but you'd pretty much have to take the bumper off on that curb before the filter is even touched.

I remember the 2.0 in the focus, that engine had noisy injectors as well. These days, the fuel injectors are far louder than anything else on the engine at idle, in most cars.

Agreed. The Zetec 2.0 had the loudest injectors I've ever heard though, even louder than the Duratec. You could hear the injectors on that motor before you saw the car! Most motors' injectors, including the Duratec, get quieter as the motor warms up. But not the Zetec!

This was the 2nd start/run. The first start run we let it idle for about five minutes prior to this.

The engine has always had a pronounced injector click/tick since bought (bought used in 2010 w/ 45K on it).
