I have a 2008 Dodge with the 6.7 Cummins...no DPF and no EGR...I run Lubrication Engineers Syn 5w40...I am at 9100 miles on this fill...Last minute trip to Florida has become necessary, about 3300 miles anticipated...Change now or run it out to 12-13K miles ? I know it's subjective, I'm just curious as to the boards thoughts on this !

Considering it's all highway, & you're running syn, I would run it, just make sure it's topped off. My '06 is rated 10K on the non-severe schedule, even with dino 15W40. Bring a quart or 2 along though, in case you need it.

My advice is to bring enough to deal with a top up plus 1 more litre/quart, and do your trip.

I'm assuming you are asking because you are thinking about the time you have between this moment and when you have to leave on your trip. Otherwise I don't see why you would not do the change before you leave if it's a concern.

The advice to "run her" and change afterward is assuming that the truck is currently running as normal, and your regular OCI's have shown no issues in the past, and that you drive in a reasonable manner ... no excessive speed, no heavy loads, no lugging. Just nice easy highway driving.

If you much prefer the oil you are currently using, you can always carry an oil change's worth of oil and a new filter, and do the change at some point along your trip when you have a spare hour or so (may as well poke around and do an overall conditions and fluid check while you're there).

Don't forget to carry the tools necessary to do the change with you, like a filter wrench, which you probably don't carry as part of your regular in-truck tool kit.

Or, if you prefer to have someone else do the oil change, and if you are making the trip and expect to see people you know and trust, maybe they could recommend a decent shop that would do the change for you with supplied oil and filter. It's all about what kind of time you have and how busy you will be along the way.

Last time I dealt with this (1200 miles each way) I did the change myself, while around half way through the trip, and done this way because I wanted to check out the truck overall after some miles were put on it, and for peace of mind for the trip back. All was well, and I am glad I did it that way.

But an issue did develop that I had not anticipated (thus my advice about carrying oil and filter), and that was because there was a change in climate between my home and the destination, I could not buy the oil I usually use there (no Mobil1 0W-40 in sight ... OW-20 or 5W-whatever only).

But, the short answer is, I would not hesitate to do the trip and change afterward. I don't think you have to worry about any issues as far as that goes.

Why not run it and do an OCI after trip and send it in for an UOA. I'm planning to run my '10 6.7L Cummins to 15000KM and send a UOA in, I have Shell Rotella T6 5W40 in it right now.

I run my 2007 6.7L Cummins (DPF, cat, and EGR deleted) for much longer intervals. Based on lab analysis from Blackstone, I'm up to 18k miles and more than two years. 12k miles is nothing for a Cummins, except for the early 6.7s that have the factory stuff intact so that it injects raw fuel during the exhaust stroke to regenerate the DPF. Whoever came up with that idea at Cummins should be tarred and feathered.

Change it. If it was me, I would worry about it and it would ruin the whole trip for me. If you have to ask, change it.

I tow pretty heavy, 12-15,000 lbs. Again, I realize this is anecdotal but interested to hear from those who do extended OCI's on these trucks.

Search some of the UOAs from BigGreyMegaCab and you'll see that he successfully ran up to 20k miles on VBP.

Unless you suspect something is wrong (contamination due to fuel or silica injestion ...) there is no reason not to run the OCI out. You're running a premium syn and can EASILY go 12-13k miles, especially with no EGR or regens.

Since your DPF and EGR fell off you are absolutely fine. Even more so since you're running Syn.

^^^ This.

3 gallons of oil later, you can sleep like a baby.

Admittedly, if you sleep better, then perhaps it's worth it.
But the engine itself isn't going to know one way or another whatsoever. What you find reassuring means nothing to the engine.
