2008 Cobalt Manual Tranny

My brother in law has a 2008 Chevy cobalt 2.2L with the manual transmission. He has 30k on the car and we would like to change the manual transmission fluid. According to the amsoil site this manual transmission takes ATF? I thought manual transmissions took gear oil?

I just want to make sure before we swap it out tomorrow?

That car has the Getrag F23 right? GM calls for "Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fuid" part Number 88861800.

There are plenty of manuals that take ATF...

Many new transmissions are specd for ATF.
This is for cold weather performance, and keeping costs down by utilizing one fluid for manual transmissions, auto transmissions, transfer cases, and power steerig systems.
Also, carbon fiber [paper] synchros in some transmissions like thin fluids.
But a real manual trans gear oil is usually best. You don't have to get the old fashioned thick stuff. You can get better protection and shifting with a light Synchromesh type gear oil.
Amsoil MTF or Redline MTL are superb.

Sounds like you do NOT want to use Dex VI in this transmission, you can run Dex III but it is discontinued and you will likely not find it. If you use a synthetic Dex III equivalent make sure it is type H compatable.
From the manual it says to use the part number I referenced before...Up through '07 the manual says Dex III, then in '08 it switches to the Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid....Sounds like the safest bet to me. But I did find many who are using the synthetic Dex III euivalents from Amsoil, M1 and RL.
