Still on my quest to find a better fluid than ATF+4 to use in a 6-speed manual transmission (Getrag). I am a bit concerned about the viscosity when the vehicle is used in hot temps, being a turbo application with almost 300 hp. I also have concerns about ATF+4 having the right friction for proper synchro operation that you might find in manual transmission lubes. Amsoil offers a synthetic ATF, and BMW has an ATF type of fluid for their manual transmissions. Does anyone think either of these fluids might be better than ATF+4, or recommend an other fluid type ?. Thanks for any replies.

Would Amsoil ATF be considered an improvement over Chrysler ATF+4 ?, secondly is Valvoline Fully Synthetic ATF+4 (licensed by Chrysler) and different than Chrysler ATF+4 ?. Lotsa questions, sorry.

In a manual transmission, IMHO maybe not. The viscosity is a might low....it would be great in the winter though.

I've gone and swapped in some GM Synchromesh fluid, it does feel better and shifts better overall. The notchiness I had in 2nd gear as been smoothed over a bit, almost feels like it has cushioned the shifts. I decided to go with the GM Synchromesh as the viscosity increase isn't too large, as compared to something like Redline MTL, and it is a bit smaller of an increase than Amsoil's MTF (though I've always liked Amsoil's MTF in my other vehicles).

I really don't know how this will work in the long run in terms of synchro wear/protection. If anyone has an opinion on this fluid in a 6mt manual getrag transmission I'd love to hear it. thanks

Joey

What would people recommend for a BMW 5-speed (2001 325CI) g'box and diff? Owners manual does not give fluid spec but I'm told it's ATF for g'box and possibly 75W90 for diff?

Which engine? M54-B25 or M56? Which transmission?

For the M54-B25 MT my look up table says:

Quote:

Manual Transmission,Yellow Label.....GLS[3]
3. Esso/Exxon MTF-LT-1, BMW Part No. 83 22 9 408 942 from
model year 2004 some manual transmissions are filled with
Castrol MTF-LT-2 which has the same properties as MTF-LT-1.
The MTF-LT-1 fluid may be mixed and or substituted for the
MTF-LT-2 manual transmission fluid, except SMG Transmission
in 2006 and later M5. 2006 and later Z4 M Coupe/Roadster
Require MTF-LT-2 fluid

Which diff?

Quote:
Standard Differential, Rear .....GLS[5]

Severe Gear 75W-90
Controlled Slip Differential, Rear .....GLS[6]

Severe Gear 75W-140
5. GLS is BMW Part No. 83 22 9 407 768 or Castrol SAF-XO.
6. GLS is BMW Part No. 83 22 1 470 080 or Castrol SAF-XJ.

My car is a Caliber SRT4 - turbo 2.4L with 6-MT transmission. I agree that ATF+4 is a good auto transmission fluid, I just don't like the way it affects shifting in this manual transmission.

The Royal Purple SycroMax fluid is a good fluid for manual transmissions that spec ATF. You'll find most guys on the BMW forums run it.

I switched to RP Synchromax in my 04 SRT4, but my trans is an NVG T850 with a Quaife LSD. It shifts much better in all conditions with the RP. The manual calls for ATF+4 and 4oz of Mopar friction modifier.

Thanks for the info, I might check it out after my first fluid change interval.
