2008 altima

2.5 liter 4 cylinder, car is for a teacher, 34 miles a day, 17 miles one way to school and back. Fifteen of those miles will be at 70-75 mph. I was curious as to which oil to use, I had an '02 Altima, first year of the QR25DE engine, and it stated in the manual I could use anything from a 5W30 to a 10w30 and 10W40. for the 2008, it only says 5W30, but i think the other grades could be run. I was considering the following: Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W30, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30, Mobil 1 0W40, or the Caterham blend (not sure to go with half and half, 60% TGMO, 40% Mobil 1 0W40 or vice versa.) Leaning towards just running 0W40, seen a few Altima used oil analysis with 0W40 and they turned out well, also heard Nissan engines are hard on oil. will do 6k ocis.

5W30 with PP, PU or M1 would be my choices, not in any order here. Ed

For the $$ of the oils you are considering, you might want to do a used oil analysis to extend out the OCI. It would pay for itself. Frankly for that type of driving, your planned OCI and the area you are in, I would be just be doing conventional oil changes.

Until recently, I had a 2008 Altima Coupe with the QR25DE. That engine isn't particularly hard on oil; it's the VQ-Series (i.e. V6) that is known to be a bit tougher.

I ran a variety of 5w30 synthetics (i.e. Valvoline SynPower, Castrol Edge, Pennzoil Ultra, G-OIL, Royal Purple) for 6000-7500 miles intervals. They all performed very well and produced very good used oil analysis which you can review here.

Given my experience, I would recommend using a name-brand synthetic in 5w30 with a quality filter for 6K mile intervals unless you get a used oil analysis that shows you can go more. (IMO 0W-30, 10w30, and 0W-40 would all do fine too, but I don't think they're going to anything better, worse, or different in your climate and driving conditions.)

Honestly that engine would do just fine with a good conventional. About 90% highway miles in a teachers car is not what I would call "severe service".

But if synthetic is a must, any 5w30 in your favorite flavor for ~6k miles will do.

My wife's car (2008) had 120,000 miles on it when someone wrecked her and totaled it. 5,000 mile OCIs with either Pennzoil Conventional or Quaker State. It still purred like the day we bought it, and the spark plugs were squeaky clean when I changed them at 100,000 miles.
