My older sisters vehicle, she is retired from teaching..

Ford tells her the check engine light is that she needs a new catalytic converter-part is $2100 not including labor, she is going to take it to a muffler shop to get a second quote.

Any other options? or thoughts...

I would suggest doing all the 02 sensors and converters at once or your gonna be doing it again ...6 months ago I did the exact same thing on a 07 f150 5.4 3v that gets driven daily...I bought the magnaflow direct fit converters and 4 bosch O2 sensors from Oreillys and had a nieghborhood tire/muffler shop install it all...had about $1200 in it ....so far so good..no codes or anything..
 
thanks, she doesn't know the code, but she said she saw the computer screen and it read "catalytic converter inefficiency"

my only thought at this time, is if i can locate and buy catalytic converter for her and then have a shop do the labor.

is this a model that will allow for catalytic exchange only, in other words without replacing the muffler and additional pipes. i have had catalytic replacements only(welded on) in other vehicles this way, but have no knowledge on this lincoln vehicle nor the condition of the rest of the system, but i will be down there(she lives in texas, i in midwest) on xmas

she has had o2 sensors replaced not too long ago, but let me see if i can get more info.

Did they both fail? From what I am seeing on rockauto is those navigators have a left and right cat. I would def. get a second or third quote. That is a lot of scratch for just a part.
 
good info,

my sister is going to get more info on quote from ford at noon, so hopefully i will know more.

she is supposed to find out, if quote includes O2 replacements or just cat con, now i will add whether there is 2 cat cons...........

and thank you very much for helping her out, she's retired and her husband(vietnam vet) died from cancer back in 2008, so she leans on me a lot for these kinds of things...........

thanks, in this case...vehicle is still running fine, so she caught it early but wants to fix before it gets bad because she is smelling what she thinks are faint fuel odors inside the cab...

what kind of warranty would the OEM parts carry? are you with a ford dealer? thanks for your help on this because with my sister living alone and not having anyone to help out with this stuff, i would like to get the best possible for her not to have to worry about this anymore.

she drives 220 miles round trip at least every other weekend if not more often to help our mom(86 years old and with dementia)

The catalytic converters would be covered under a Federal or California emissions warranty. Replacements are covered under the Ford 2 year unlimited mile replacement part warranty.

74,000 miles. and i had her run a bottle of cat con cleaner, no luck it seems from everything she's telling me, CEL returned.

what do you mean by CA or 49 state emissions warranty-expand please, AFAIK not in her town/county

she lives in texas.

I would like to know if there are misfires. Those cause gas smells and cat failure. Can they view mode 6 OBD data to verify that?

No, the warranty is a parts warranty that Ford puts on all their parts. There is no federal requirement for the OEMs to offer a special warranty on replacement catalytic converters.
