What are folks' thoughts and experiences on the Jeep Commander? I've had several Jeeps and despite some issues as they age, I've been happy with them.

This may replace my '06 SAAB 97X. This SAAB (actually a Trailblazer in Swedish clothes) is a wonderful SUV for three seasons but is truly disappointing in anything beyond light to moderate snow despite a new set of snow rated all season tires. The AWD and TC system on the SAAB seems to allow too much rear wheelspin before sending power to the front wheels...and even then the rears continue to spin. In the SAAB's defense, this winter in the Northeast has been unusual, but our AWD SAAB sedan (93X) has not had a problem.

Thanks all.

Keep the Saab.

I went from an Envoy to a Jeep, back to the Envoy.

Trust me, the Jeep is not a good substitute for the (IMO) luxury feel and ride of the T360 chassis. The Jeep will get worse gas mileage that the Saab and the HP to engine size ratio is way off. The 4.2l Atlas I6 was giving 291hp in its heyday, compared to what - 220hp or something for a 4.7l chrysler engine?

I dont know if your Saab has full time 4wd, it sounds like it has GM's genius (sarcasm) AWD system that the Bravada had before it was axed. If it is that system, I agree on the lag to kick in and the jolt you receive when it does. There is no substitute for real full time AWD or 4wd.

My suggestion, if you are absolutely batsh** on getting rid of the Saab - look into an Envoy Denali. It has selectable full time 4wd and the look, feel, and ride of a luxury vehicle but with a 4wd system that kicks butt.

Sounds like your part time AWD system isn't working well, can you choose to lock the centre diff or coupling or whatever it is? If you can lock it, you should be able to spin both the fronts and backs in the snow by stomping on it. If only the backs are spinning then you've got a problem.
Also we run snow tires(with the snow flake on the sidewall) on the Tracker and it makes a difference even with 4WD. So much so that I drive it in 2WD for fun around town in the snow. Stopping and turning is much improved over all-seasons.

This.

thanks for the comments. i'll look at the envoy. i do like the 97x, it is a great driving vehicle in most weather and its really only been this winter that I have had any serious issues...that said, getting stuck in my own plowed driveway is frustrating.

i believe it is the same "awd" system as the bravada...apparently tuned, or should I say programmed, to drive more like an rwd vehicle as opposed to true awd.

actually the 4.7 was increased to 305hp. Drive the Jeep then decide. I am not a Jeep guy but I was impressed with the Liberty I had for a rental other than the 3.7. As for the 9-7x what rubber do you have on it? Brand/Series.

If you want a serious off-road biased SUV, then look at Toyota 4-Runner, Nissan Xterra, Land Rover, G-Wagen or Cayenne to compliment your 996!
