The check engine light came on on my 2006 Colorado (2.8 engine). Scanned it at work and codes came up for the engine coolant temperature sensor and an evap code. Cleared the codes and it came back on shortly afterwards. I ordered a temp sensor and plan to replace it myself because it should be a fairly easy job. If I replace the sensor, can I reset the light by removing the battery cables?

I have heard the battery disconnect option for tuining out the light. Or perhaps the light will go out on it's own after the problem has been eliminated. May take a few driving cycles though.

Yes, you can clear the light by taking off the battery cables, just remember it will wipe "learned" things like idle and maybe transmission shifting that are retained when you clear codes with a scan tool. You may need to drive it a little for it to relearn normal idle, shifting, etc. Some vehicles have a relearn procedure to follow, but I doubt it's anything complex on the Colorado, probably just driving it some is all it needs.

And like TallPaul said, if the coolant temp sensor fixes the issue, the light will go away on its own once the ECM determines everything is good.

I just changed a thermostat out on a 2006 Hummer H3 with the I6...basically a Colorado beefed up. I found the easiest way was to pull the wheel and wheel liner and it's right in your face. Not sure about the I4 that you have, but think about that before working from the top. I got the best deal on an AC DELCO part from Rock Auto. The Autozone part was $15 more! The thermostat and housing all were one part and replace together.

What was the exact code? If it was P0128, its thermostat time, and that code would definitely coincide with a bad t-stat and the weather this time of year.

I ordered the ECT sensor. The tech checked codes again prior to the install. The coolant code was no longer present but the evap code was. Found that the evap vent valve/solenoid(?) was cracked and leaking air. Replaced that and all seems fine. Luckily, I can return the coolant temp sensor.

I thought the H3 only came with the I5? I6 was only a GM T360 engine.

To the OP, what is the exact EVAP code you're getting? Could be as simple as a bad gas cap.
