In my mind that is the whole problem... many who buy these older expensive cars are NOT affluent and cannot afford the repairs. If you can DIY you at least stand a chance, but if you have to go out in the real world and pay for services they can get expensive. Not everyone knows a good indy who is cheap.
Perfect example is my neighbors gorgeous older XJ8. It is parked as the trans went, and the estimates have him quite concerned! He only paid 4500 bucks for it and it sure looked like a bargain!
