Ted, I believe you.

Did you see what Edmundu's Legacy did to Castrol GTX in under 5K??

I just didn't understand why M1 doesn't have some turbo exclusion language like Amsoil does.

I wouldn't be brave enough to run a starburst dino in this engine much.

But then, I run the **** out of mine as well

Actually, my makeup oil could just be .5-.6 of a quart because I was looking at the quarts I have left from previous OCIs and I have 1 unopened and another empty quart of Mobil 1 EP, and as I always get 6 quarts, with 5 used for the oil change and 1 for the makeup, it looks like I used 1 quart of makeup oil for the 2 previous OCIs. So it looks the oil consumption is about 1/2 quart.

Run your ej on the same oil for a while and the consumption will probably go down. The main factor with consumption with my wrx is switching oils. I went from .5 quarts makeup in 7K to 2 quarts in 5k when I switched from amsoil to synergyn. After using synergyn for a while now Im at .5 in 7k again.

I'm seeing the same thing. On M1 EP, I'm down 1/4 of a quart in 800 miles. In my last 5,000 mile run, I only used 1/4qt due to break in. So it's from switching most likely.

I think Mobil 1 xw-30's are great oils, but except for short trip use I think they are way too thin for the EJ25. I have seen obscene consumption with the SS 5w-30 and 10w-30 in our NA EJ25. I prefer an oil of at least 12cSt in this engine. If this were my car I would run T&SUV or AFL year round in NC. Maybe just maybe GC in the winter.

The manual approves 10-W50, so I put about 3/4 of Mobil 1 EP 10-W50. I find that the engine bay is hotter after adding the 10-W50, is that okay?

Sparkman. What is T&SUV or AFL ? Ok, I'll try Mobil 1 10-W40 in my next oil change to see if it will reduce the consumption.

My consuption has stopped completely. Very happy about that. The 10w-40 will help, if you can find it.

Mobil-1 EP 10w-50? Never heard of such an oil. Do you mean Mobil-1 EP 15w-50?

"T&SUV" refers to Mobil-1 5w-40 Truck & SUV Formula. Most feel this is the same oil as Mobil's Delvac 1 which is a super high-quality synthetic oil used by over-the-road 18-wheelers. A VERY robust oil. Mobil-1 T&SUV 5w-40 is available at my local Wal-Mart in a 5-quart jug for $20...a bargain considering how good the oil is.

If you commuted in flatland, that consumption would be a red flag. But traveling thru all the mountains of North Carolina & Virginia every week, I think that consumption would be normal for any Group III. Only way to tell is by trying a Valvoline, Castrol or Pennzoil for the same miles next OCI. I'd recommend Amsoil, Red Line.. etc... but they are more money.

Had another oil change, and I found out that my dealership puts all 5 quarts of the M1 I give them isntead of 4.2, which is what the engine is rated for. They said that since the engine is gonna burn off some, there is no harm done. There is nothing wrong with the engine/car, e.g. CEL.

But is it okay to put 0.8 more quarts than the engine is rated for?!!! Comments?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, The Stealership knows more the MFG of the car....

If the manual states 4.2 and the dipstick shows full @ 4.2, there is NO way I'd be stuffing another 24 oz of oil in a boxer (or anyother type) engine.

Another reason why I change my own oil...

Take care, bill

Check the oil level on the dipstick, my STi Owner's Manual (essentially the same 2.5 litre engine) has an incorrect oil capacity listed per this e-mail I rec'd from Subaru customer service:

quote:

"Dear Andy:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. The engine oil capacity specification in your owner's manual (4.2 quarts) is the capacity of the engine oil and not the capacity of the engine oil when replacing the engine oil filter. The capacity of engine oil when replacing the oil filter in your 2005 WRX STi Sedan is 5.1 quarts.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance. If you need any future assistance, please feel free to contact us again.

FWIW, I usually use 4.8 quarts of oil with an oil & filter change.

Same for the Forester XT, but I would've thought that they fixed it by the time the LGT came out.

They must have the manuals printed in bulk a year or two ahead of time.
