I really don't see waiting two whole years for a car, although I do agree with the reasoning behind it. If gas prices pass the $2.50 mark, and stay there, I'll get a more economic car anyway.

The Avalon's requirement for premium shouldn't turn you away. We have an 02 Avalon and on Premium fuel, it gets 30+mpg on the highway. On a road trip from Katy to Baton Rouge, about 300 miles, it made it with more than half a tank to spare. It has an 18 gallon tank. I haven't tried this trip on regular but I do know that the 3.0L v6 can take either but gets better mileage (at least city wise) on premium. I dunno about the 3.5L V6 and its reaction to regular. If the manuel says its ok, then it should be like the 3.0L's reaction to it.

Not only does it turn me away, it makes me run like an olympic sprinter! I absoulutely find it unreasonable to design a car that has to have premium fuel. Unless it's a super high performance beast, and I'm wealthy, I'll leave the premium drinking Toyota's to others. Loads of auto makers have put together great cars, that have volumnes of horsepower, and run on regular. This is a line that I don't cross until I'm able to justify it, and right now, with high gas prices, I would be insane to buy a car that requires premium. Just me.

Eh to each his own. The 3.0L in the 2nd gen Avalon/3rd gen Avalon 3.5L V6 are tuned to a higher extent with VVT-i compared to the other vehicles that use the same engines. When the 2nd gen Avalon came out, the 3.0L made 210hp, opposed to the Camry, which made 192hp, from the same engine.

I do think it is unfair to compare a Mustang with a Avalon. The Mustang has 8 cylinders so it is going to make more power and won't need premium because it has lower compression (9.8:1 compared to 10.8:1). The Avalon's engine is tuned to a higher extent and makes 280hp from 6 cylinders. That's 20 hp shy of the Mustang, from 3.5Ls opposed to the 4.6Ls. Heck, the 4.0L in the Mustang only puts out 210hp.
Mustang's HP/Liter = 65.217hp/L
Avalon's HP/Liter = 80hp/L

The cars in the Avalon's class, like the Maxima say regular can be used but premium should be used for maximum performance, just like the Avalon. Knock sensors. Rent an Avalon for the weekend, drive it with regular gas and see how it feels and record the mileage.

Your facts are spot on. I'm not meaning to compare two cars from differing catagories, it's just that after looking at what choices and are out there, those two turned my crank the most. Because of the premium need for the avalon, I'm back to the Crown Vic (tried and true platform, albeit dated) and the new Mustang GT (not tried, maybe true). Again, two cars from differing automotive catagories....yet, I like them and what they have as attributes.

I have a 02 GT Stang with 31k miles that I bought new..I can say that this is the most fun car I ever owned..25pmg on 87 octane..to fast for me..the 4.6 is a dream motor..at 75mph it turns 2k rpm..I run the MC 5-20 all year long with the MC filter..paid 21,600 plus tax..I've had only 1 rattle and a rear end gasket leak..fixed under warranty..if you don't mind the price get it..they had some head design problems in the early 05's but that should be cleared up by now..

I just went to www.carsdirect.com and priced a 2005 GT Premium and it gave me MSRP but no mark up. Locally I've seen Saleen and Roush Mustangs marked up but it looks like most regular Stangs are sold at sticker.

In 6 months you'll be able to buy em cheap, prolly with a rebate or discount financing.

It's a great car. People knock Ford but IMO, GM makes more lousy cars/trucks then anyone. I think 4.6L is a tough engine.

I would have bought a new one but a few reasons held me back. Rear wheel drive (snow), price because they are new is very high right now and not so much of an issue but somewhat of one is the gas mileage. I'm getting 26 mpg in the city, 34 hwhy. If I had a Mustang I'd be drivng hard most likely and not getting too good of gas mileage.

You could probably walk into a Canadian dealer and get a deal. Too bad about the exchange rate though...had it been this time last year you would have saved a lot.

I was working on some renovations at a Toyota dealer in Niagara Falls and they actually had two car carriers out front. One was unloading dealer stock and the second was loading up all the convertables and other expensive model lines. Those cars don't sell in Canada so the dealer was getting his quota and selling them in the states. Later on I was doing work at the dealers house and he had over 100 new cars parked in the bush waiting to go to the states!

You won't regret waiting 2 years for the 2007 Mustang GT. By then all the bugs and recalls will have been fixed. My buddy bought a brand new 1996 Mustang GT (1st year of the 4.6 motor) and he had nothing but trouble. Transmission popped out of gear, A/C didn't stay cold, a leaking wind shield, a very noisey fuel pump.

Acutually the 4.6L was in production before being used in the Mustang. Crown vics the Mercury version had that motor as late as the early 90's.

While the 2005 Mustang offers the "4.6L" it's a different engine than previous 4.6's. Earlier 4.6's were either the "regular" 2 valves/cylinder engine or the "hot rod" 4 valves/cylinder. This 3 valve/cylinder is new for the 4.6L. I'd give them time to work out the bugs. Plus you'll save lots of $$$$$ if you wait.
