I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 with 28K miles on it. When new I would run Mobil 1 5w30. At about 15K I switched to Castrol Syntec 5w30 and the engine ran alot quieter. No valve noise. I am considering switching to A HDEO such as Rotella T syn. 5W-40 as I understand these motors like the HDEO. Any thoughts? I typically change the oil at 4K to 5K intervals. I realize that the oil would go alot longer than that but this vehicle spends most of its time in the garage (parked) and changing the oil gives me something to do and a chance to look it over.

The Rotella T 5W-40 would be an excellent oil for your Wrangler.

I use Delo SAE30 in my Jeep during the Spring/Summer/Fall wheeling season. It works well.
Delvac 1 5W-40 is another option.

By looking at my previous used oil analysis I find that in my 4.0 (1994) it trends higher iron when running a PCMO. Not a significant difference since the average iron is equal or 25ppm when running PCMO. Mind you that I have never had a winter sample analyzed.
A while ago I posted my buddy's winter sample, he mixed 3qts Mobil 1 0w30 with 3qts PP I believe, just threw in what he had left on the shelf. His iron was 65ppm around 4k, if I remember, running all winter. I'm not sure if that high iron was mainly due to his long idle times (power on site equipment) or because of the mixing or due to a whole list of other factors. He's never done another analysis.
I was debating running either syn rotella 5w-40 or the conventional rotella 10w30 both locally available. They appear to have similiar pour points. But I can only find the cold cranking viscosity for the 5w-40.

I am running a pcmo 5w30 in mine right now and the engine seems kinda loud. I just bought this jeep with 98K on it and I know from reading that the 4.0 can be a little rough around the edges. I was going to try a 10w30 next. I am hoping this thread will lead me to something that will smooth out the engine a little and not kill the fuel economy.
Rotella 5W40 is a great match for the Jeep 4.0 and even its little brother, the 2.5-which is more or less a 4.0 with two cylinders cut off. used oil analysis have shown the 4.0 to prefer a 40wt oil.

At 110K, the only "major" service has been a water pump and fuel injector replacement-of which neither is related to the engine oil. Nothing has been touched internally and I don't see any reason why I'd have to go into the engine at all. I haven't so much as had to even pop the valve cover off. This engine is likely going to outlast the rest of the Jeep and it will surely outlast the 32RH transmission.
