Today I did an oil change on the wife's expedition. The vehicle has always been serviced by ford. Its always has a motorcraft fl820s oil filter. Today I used the ultra xg2. On some forums it says that the motor crafts are different in design for fords modular engine's. Did I make a mistake using an ultra.

Only if you do not use it long enough to get your money's worth. The Ultra is a 15K filter and I have used them on a 5.4L for up to 17K with no issues whatsoever.

What they're referring to is that Ford specs Motorcraft filters to have the bypass valve in the threaded end, where most others have it in the dome end. The thinking is that during a bypass event, this will keep oil from washing over the "dirty" side of the media and potentially carrying debris into the engine.

Did you make a mistake? Well, how many millions of police cars, taxis, and pick-em up trucks use that same engine with a non-Motorcraft filter and last more than 200,000 miles?

The Ultra is a good filter...sleep well.

It will be fine. Motorcraft & FRAM Ultras are both perfect for these Fords that are sometimes picky about oil filters. Best of the best.

If memory serves me, the purolator and amsoil filters have the bypass on the wrong end for the Ford engines. My Ford has ran fine with the wix filters for many many years and with the ultra now for about 4yrs.

Most all filters for Ford have the bypass on the "wrong" end since most filters use dome end bypass versus Motorcraft's threaded end bypass. However, bypass events happen very infrequently (as shown in testing done by Jim Allen) so this is really a non-issue. The XG2 the OP has is one of the best filters for the money on the market today.

To add, if the motor is really clean inside then having the bypass valve on the dome end on a Ford that has the dome end down wouldn't be much risk. But if the engine is pretty dirty and cut open filters show a lot of crud inside, then sticking with the base end bypass valve might be worth it.
