my gf's 05 corolla with 108k miles on it for some reason seems to be using oil perhaps? i changed the oil about 3500 miles ago and used valvoline 10w30 bc it was on sale. normally i use 5w30 castrol or Pennzoil pending on which is on sale. do the corollas not like the valvoline and or the weight of the oil? i dont think its leaking i checked. its about 1/2 to 3/4ths low and it has NEVER been low before. i will double check for leaks

btw we have had a few trips lately on the interstate in which i have done about 85-90mph for lenthy periods. curious if that could have been in an issue for the 10w30 bc i have done it with 5w30 Pennzoil and castrol with the oil staying normal.

i have read that when switching brands there is the *possibility* of some consumption but it should taper off after a few oci's

There was a TSB about the 1ZZFE using oil when operated at "sustained high speed operation"

My uses about 4 to 24 oz in 4k miles depending on what oil I use.

I would not be concerned. Just make sure that the oil level is checked.

Take care, bill

Maybe its time for a new pcv valve? Esp after 100k miles. Other options would be using some high mileage oils or trying auto-rx.

just put a new pcv valve in.

bill, its never used oil until then and i think it maybe bc of the highspeed issue. atleast i am hoping on that. i will change her oil over this week back to 5w30 Pennzoil (per your used oil analysis).. and go from there. i will also be checking close for leaks.

I have had two cars that used a bit of oil only after I changed brands although both were 5W30. Once I returned to the previously used brand the consumption stopped after the 2nd oil change with the old brand. It can and does happen! Due to those experiences I now stick with one brand completely.
Not a test from SWRI but it certainly proved to me that it is real.

yeah i believe ill stick with Pennzoil or castrol. i know those two do very well in her car (no consumption)

the manual for my 04 corolla says it is acceptable for the car to burn up to 1 quart of oil every couple thousandth miles im not sure but i think the corolla engine might have oil squirters

It is normal for the Carolla to use some oil. It does not seem to hurt durability though so it is just something people put up with when they get the 1.8L in the Carolla. Not everyone has this problem but it is common enough though hence the TSB that Bill mentioned.

The mileage matters here. If it's burning a quart and barely has 20K miles, I'd get that checked out under warranty. If it has 200K miles, well, that's a different story...

In your girlfriend's case, I'd keep an eye on it until the next oil change, but that still seems a bit much all things considered.

Which oils does your Corolla like to consume?

Try some maxlife blend in it....

this was our first fun with regular valvoline 10w30. i am sure its good oil its just this is the first noticable usage of oil in her car but again. i had that thing pegged going down the highway which we normally do not do. i am going to change her oil sometime this week and double check for leaks. ill be switching back to Pennzoil. i think ill try to stick with the same brand for some time... i may switch to maxlife when she gets a lot more miles on her.. go from there.. i like those lil cars. we averaged 35 miles per gallon in stop and go traffic and pretty high freeway speeds.. not too shabby if you ask me
