Hello everyone,

I am looking at purchasing either a 2005 or a 2007 Toyota Tacoma V6. Both that I have seen have about 65K miles on them. Are there any major problems typical with such mileage on these vehicles? Is 60k miles too much to consider purchasing a used Tacoma. I have no idea so I thought I would ask.

Thank you.

The earlier model had an issue on some trucks with a weld breaking on the frame to engine mount.
I believe this was corrected by the 2006 models.
Other than that, I am not aware of anything significant.
They are good trucks. (I have an '07)

Not sure, but look into the rusty frame problem with the prior model. Here in the salt areas, the 2004s are getting rusty frames, and it is the current model. Surprising.

I have owned this generation tacoma. If they have been properly serviced they are good vehicles. Do they have the tow package? (that includes the upgraded fan and oil cooler) as well as the inverter? THe drivetrain is solid. I had a love hate relation with the composite bed. The DANA frames in the 1996-2004 models were the rusters. I owned two modified them and ran them up and down a beach for many miles. THere is an area on the frame just forward of the rear wheel wells that collects debris and holds moisture that is susceptable on those earlier moodels. I didn't offroad or beach drive my 2006 so I was never concerned about frame rust.

Up here in the rust belt its hard to find one without a wooden bed or broken back. The originals just rotted away.
Frames are absolute rubbish, the local Toyota dealer has a line waiting to be taken away, all have broken backs.

3.0 litre V6 had bad sludge issues (not sure if the Tacoma uses this engine).Toyota claims to have these issues fixed but they keep cropping up with exactly the same problems, even the tundra is showing signs of premature rusting in the frame area.

last year of the 3.slow was 95. THe 3.4 took over until 2005 when the 1grfe was put into service(current 4.0 v6).
THese are outsourced frames from th3e Dana corp and is one reason I prefer my Toyotas to be made in Japan(the frames are better than the AMerican sourced ones).

Hmmmm....how is it that the Frames that Dana builds for Ford dont rust out like the Toyotas?

The problem isn't with Dana, it's with the cheap specs that Toyota was willing to pay Dana to build them to.

Why do you come to an oil forum with that question? Why don't you go to a Tacoma forum and ask them? I'm not saying that people here don't know, but there is much more technical talk about Tacomas at a Tacoma forum.

I had a 92 Toyota p/u with the 3 litre engine and at 116,000 when I checked the valves there was no sludge. Too bad it was totalled 6,000 miles later. It was a solid truck. 3.slow it was.

If this is the vehicle of your choice definitely go for the 07. The 05( I owned one with the 4.0L )was plagued by problems ranging from cab mounts to paint issues( chips, peeling, rust )to engine noises and on and on. The paint issue( extremely easy to chip )was somewhat rectified in later models by an increase in chip guard used in problem areas.

Note - I suspect, although I can't prove it( and rest assured Toyota would never admit it as it would make it easier for 05 owners with paint issues to make a claim against them which they have resisted tooth and nail ), that the paint process was changed as well? I have "some" auto body experience/knowledge and it was clear to me my truck suffered from improperly applied( ie; poor surface prep ), too thin, of a paint job with thick runny chip guard sprayed on in problem areas to compensate. Horrendous paint job! I have looked at later models and the paint looks a lot better( still have seen a lot of chips but not as bad as the 05's ).

I sold mine just 7 months after purchase I hated it so much. Worst vehicle I have ever owned and just a TON of issues ranging from minor to major. I honeslty can't recommend an 05+ Tacoma at all. Wouldn't take an 05+ Tacoma as a gift. However, if that is the brand and model you really want( and that is fine - you will be paying for it not me so not telling you what to do )without doubt avoid the 05 and go for the 07. Many of those 1st year model issues should have eben resolved by 07.

That's too bad you had all those issues. Very disappointing to get something and have trouble. Mine's (the Tacoma) been a good experience, but I had vehicles before that were a real bummer, and I know the feeling.

In all fairness my 99 expedition frame needs to be kept after yearly or it would have gone already. My dads 99 Ranger is in perfect condition body wise but the frame is toast.

GMC Denali XL and HD2500 of similar vintage that are owned by other family members are clean in the frame area with no maintenance at all.
