I just recently replaced the o2 sensor on the Honda. The car now has 127,000 miles on it. I also recently ran a bottle of Amsoil engine flush.

After the car sits all night, when I start it up I am getting smoke out the tailpipe for about 30 seconds. This has never happened on this car before. It eventually goes away and won't come back until the following morning, after the car has sat all night.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

That would be my first shot as well. You had said this before - this car consumed oil since new, right?

Are you telling us that the smoking started *after* the Amsoil flush? If so, I would be very *unhappy* camper!

Correct. Car has consumed oil since new. Only recently noticed smoke on start up. Goes away after 30 seconds or so.

I hope it's not from the Amsoil Engine flush. I did order a bottle of the new Amsoil engine flush for future use.

It's possible that in the past you weren't seeing the smoke because it was burning off on your cat.I don't see how one use of Amsoil flush would suddenly make your engine burn MORE oil, but it's possible that it cleaned some crud off your valve stem seals and an allowed more oil to pass.

The only flush I do is my toilet

I would think the stuff in the flush would soften or lube the seals rather than cause more smoke. Maybe you have some ring cleanup going on that will go away after the varnish moves around. A Hard drive might help.

Well I'm not losing more oil. In fact after putting in M1 0w-30, oil consumption seems to be down a tad (maybe). The car gets driven very hard.

Could it be the CAT is going?

The flush worked.
What probably happened is that the valve seals/stems/guides were cleaned and now have a bit more clearance. More oil is flowing through them.

I think you may be right mechtech. However, I didn't pay attention to whether this was occurring immediately after I ran the flush and performed the oil change. I'm not sure if this started after the flush, or after I put in the o2 sensor. Then again, it could have nothing to do with both. I think the most likely scenario is what you stated.

Based on your description that it smokes on startup it would sound like valve seals or excessive valve guide clearance. However, it could be an oil control ring problem too.

Have you own this vehicle since new? At 127K miles and five years, you should not be having these kind of problems. If you have not much to lose, why not try ARX?

Yes I've had this car since new. It runs like new and has always consumed some amount of oil.

Yes. The engine has always consumed about 1/2 qt per 4,500/5k miles. Runs like new. Most of the mileage was highway. It does see high rpm's at times.

Within the last month, the check engine light came on for the first time. The code showed that the secondary o2 sensor was bad. I had it replaced. A few weeks prior, I ran a bottle of Amsoil engine flush and replaced the oil with M1 0w30. I was not paying attention at the time to whether smoke was coming out.

A small % of the 2.4's consume some oil. It also depends on how you drive and how the engine is broken-in.

I think the Amsoil engine flush may have worked, and now a bit more oil is getting by. So far, oil consumption is a tad down with M1 0w30. I attribute that to the engine flush, assuming oil consumption is truly down. I don't know yet.

I picked up a bottle of the new flush. I'm tempted to do another flush after this run of M1.

That is why I don't like flushes either. IMO they are to fast acting and aggressive. They don't do much for things like valve stem seals either.

Buster how much of a PITA would it be to pull a valve cover and have a look at the stem seals?
