Just performed a PDI on a 04 S60 Volvo today, and noticed that printed on the oil fill cap, "Volvo recommends Castrol", and also says this in the owners manual, but then recommends a 7,500 miles oil change intervals.

Just thought that might be a bit much.

I noticed that in my dad's 2004 Volvo XC70 manual too. They also list 5w40 as an option, but the dealer only sells 10w30 Syntec or 5w30 Volvo dino oil. I've convinced my dad to let me do the oil changes, and he'll be running GC 0w30 all year round, and will be doing 12,000km intervals (7.5k) The first run will be only 6000km though, since we'll be changing the oil when the car hits the 6000km mark, then he wants to continue doing it exactly on the 12s (12, 24, 36,000km, etc.)

Volvo sold out to Castrol, too? That's just stupid, but money talks and walks!

Rood, now NW Volvo, always used Valvoline. No thanks.

The best oil in the wife's 96 855, so far is the Amsoil 10W-40.

Let's talk Volvo & oils, my ex-S70T5 in year-long-summer Singapore ran on a full Syn diet of Mobil 1 5W-50, RP 15W-40, Exxon Ultraflo 5W-40 and AMSOIL S2000 0W-30.

Dealer recommended Exxon.

My observations (no UOA unfortunately) were RP tends to cook (sooty black, stinks too) pretty quick (under 3000miles), I did 3000mile changes on M1, and 75000miles intervals on TSO.

TSO was not widely available in Singapore so I stuck to M1 which did it's job well

Too bad no analysis on the 75000 mile run

I have found even in temperate climates, an xW-40 is best for these 4-5-6 cylinder white motors. Best analysis, best running, and most quiet.

This must be new because they make no mention of brand in my owner's manual (02 S40). Only says must meet API SJ and ACEA A1.

My local dealer pushes Valvoline DuraBlend. Swears it's the best stuff around. I guess Valvoline offered him the best discount on bulk.

I'd like to see a 7500mi interval on an S40 with DuraBlend.

Oops! I meant 7500miles

A decent oil analysis service is hard to come by in Singapore.
