2004 Prius RLI 0w20 10264 mi OCI

No makeup oil, EAO oil filter, OEM Air filter, Only added about 3.5 quarts at last oil change (ran out of RLI, oil level was 1/2 quart below full line), burned maybe 1/4 quart over 10k. Drained 1 1/8 quart and added 2 quarts to bring oil back to full line, oil capacity is 3.9 quarts. Will continue oil use to 20k.
Note the significant difference between the Blackstone (BL) and Dyson Analysis (DA) numbers for iron, aluminum and other elements as well as fuel and flashpoint. Many will look at this and say the Mobil 1 did just as well as the RLI, but look very carefully at the iron for the 12k, 14k, and 15k tests for Mobil 1. They go from 12 to 20 back to 12, the 12 readings from Blackstone and 20 from Dyson. Terry says that different labs use different equipment and methods and the results should be compared with caution.

heck, blackstoned can't even duplicate the numbers on 2 voa's from the same bottle sent in 3 weeks apart!

If you are using RLI because of it's renewable roots then feel free to keep going down that path I don't see it shortening the life of your engine by any stretch. They both seemed to perform well, but for the money I would say that Mobil 1 served you well if you limited your OCI's to 10,000 miles. I would run a 10k mile OCI with M1 under Dyson and see what the numbers look like. I'm not sure what Dyson's oxidation limits are, but 160 seems up there to me. Also look at the TAN on the RLI...Seems like it is creeping up, but not being familiar with what it starts out at I could be mistaken.

As far as sticking with Mobil 1, Terry Dyson recommended RLI to fight the fuel dilution. If this thread gets to a second page I will post just the last couple of analyses so it is readable.

At 14K using M1 you used DA for the first time and Fuel % was only a "Trace." Seems to me that the M1 is the better choice for this?? Then again I'm no expert but trying to interpret the vast amount of information provided.

i can see what you mean if you look at my reply where i quote you, at least on my computer it looks hosed up, but your orignal post looks good, is what i meant
 
Actually, it was the Blackstone Analysis that showed a Trace of fuel at 15k, the Dyson Analysis got 1.76 % at 14k. I trust the Dyson numbers, but a lot of people here like the Blackstone Analysis at about half the cost. I think the professional interpretation by Terry Dyson is worth the extra money and for what you get is a great value.

As far as the 6/12/2007 analysis, that was done by Dyson Analysis, I then sent a final sample to Blackstone to see if they got the high iron and fuel dilution, I had them recheck the aluminum and iron and the values were the same for iron and for aluminum only a slight difference (4ppm, 5ppm). The plugs are platinum plugs, good to 150k according to Toyota, I replaced them at 65k, with little change in nitration. I am going to try a fram paper filter to see if that will help.

The virgin oil has TAN of 1.4 and Oxidation of 140.
 
I think you'll find that with a good engine like a Toyota or Honda, oil choice really isn't that important. I've tried many brands in the Honda 2.4 and they all perform about the same from a wear perspective. I'm not sure exactly what improvements the RLI had over the M1, but I haven't looked at the data enough (yet). I just took a fast glimpse.

Oxidation doesn't seem that bad then, but the TAN approaching 4.0 well TBN is dropping out tells me that you do not want to extend the RLI past 10,000 miles in this set-up.
 
If you subtract the TAN of the virgin oil the net is about 2.2. I have an oil extractor that pulls the oil from the dipstick tube which I needed for changing the oil on my jetboat. I pulled about 1.125 quarts (it was already down almost 1 quart after pulling the sample for a UOA) and refreshed with 2 quarts. At 20k (on this oil change)I'll send another sample to Terry and we'll see how it looks. At that point I'll probably change it out and start with a fresh batch of RLI 0w20 and a clean EAO filter. I'll probably change out the plugs at that point as well. The Fram Air filter has been hard to find for the Prius, but I have found an online source and will be replacing the oem air filter soon. Hopefully that will help a number of issues, we will see after another 10k.
