I am doing some work on a 2004 VW Passat with the 2.8 V6 for a friend and he wants the oil changed. I looked up to see what oil is reccomended and have gotten conflicting answers. I have come up with 5W40 Syn, 0W40 Syn, and 5W30 Syn, and that the oil must meet VW 502. I also was told the engine held 6.5 quarts, but nowhere near that much came out when I drained it. The owner is clueless, and the owner's manual is missing. Can anybody shed some light on this?

I would go to Amsoil website, I have found them correct for everything.

Note the difference in oil capacity for FWD and AWD ! Also note the special fill instructions ( use .. 1/2 quart less and run engine before adding all oil).

Here is what they say:

You will never know if the oil capacity it the same as what came out unless you checked the oil before draining it.

Though in my experience lots of cars take little less oil than in the book.

In the UK I have I my ever seen the 2.8 v6 engine in the fourmotion model and then I would use 0w40 Mobil 1 New Life.

Though I suspect any 5w40 with the appropriate VW spec would be equally as good.

I personally wouldn't drop to a 5w30 in this era of VW vehicle unless it was on the extended drain interval service schedule as then I have seen it is sometimes specced up with a low saps 5w30.

I think the VW oil spec for extended drain servicing is different than the one you mention.

incidentally the extended drain interval in Europe is 30k km or two years, normal interval is 15k km's or one year.

Posted at the same time as previous poster.

They never had the fwd version of the 2.8 v6 in Europe, but I take it the reduced quantity mentioned would indicate the one you are talking about is a FWD.

Mobil 1 0w40 is a good choice albeit pricey.

Were it my Passat, I would rest easy with Shell Rotella T6 5w40 in the sump. 502.00 is not a modern or difficult oil specification.

The SAE grade is not as important as meeting the VW 502.00 spec. Stick with any oil that meets this spec and you'll be golden.

Was the car low on oil at the time?
