2004 Honda Civic rec. oil

I have an 04 civic with 133k on the clock. Been a great car so far BUT.. today I noticed "rod knock" not like a hammer but like one worn rod bearing. Its between 3k and 3.5k rpms only while revving engine. (Not driving that I can tell). My question is what oil should I put in it to "help" keep the engine alive. I have used WIX filters w/ 5w-20 syn Mob 1 or Castrol the first 110K then switched to 5w30 syn since. I don't like oil additives. Thought just bumping to 10w30 or 5w-40 but not really sure what route to go with my 1.7L Honda. Any advise would be welcomed. THANKS!!!

Does the car shutter/shake when doing this? Do you loose oil between OCIs?

If it's already making nasty noises, and the only option is internal engine repair, the best thing you can do is to maintain the oil level and change it frequently....either 5w20 or 5w30 should be fine. I don't think it makes a big difference in this application as long as the oil you are using is a high-quality, name-brand oil.

I wouldnt go above a 10w30. How is the oil consumption?

No oil used between OC (5k) and no vibration. I did listen very well after starting and the noise isnt there while cold but it is after reaching normal operating temp. Was thinking Rotella T5 or Mob 5w-40 . Thanks.

Rotella is a cost effective option. If it isn't consuming any oil I don't know if I'd go any thicker than a 30 grade though.
Maybe try em both out and send away a sample of each. It may help you with your decision.

I had a 2003 Civic that was knocking at 70k. It got Mobil 1 its whole life, so I don't get it. Try a cheap 10w30 first. Cheap in case you decide to dump it quickly.

I went straight to 10w-40 to quiet it down. The thick oil really turned the 1.7 into a slug when accelerating. After about two months, it was noisy again and getting rough at idle.

Sounds like piston slap to me. Nothing to freak out about. I would go with a HM 5/30

post a video of the sound its making, perhaps its the valves loosening up.

Didn't think about the valves. Thougth they where hydraulic. Will try and post a vid. Any recommended oil test facility?

If it's not burning any oil,I wouldn't go up is vis. Try Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a oem filter at the next change. Drive at less rpms to avoid the knock.jmo
