Replaced the valve cover gaskets on my recently acquired 2004 Ford Thunderbird with 69k. According to records this car has been very well maintained. The little 3.9 V8 was pretty much spotless.

Very clean indeed! Looks well maintained.

I've always been curious about those engines and the DEW 98 chassis. There are some very good buys in the Lincoln LS v-8s cars around my area; every once in a while a clean example pops up for around $5k or so, but I've been afraid to pull the trigger because of the relative scarcity of the engine and chassis parts, for any long term ownership. I've also read the Jag inspired engine can be finicky at times; I have no basis to agree or disagree.

Have him look up Thunderbird Bob if he hasn't already. He is the go to for parts on these cars.
He bought a soft top in Shreveport, I believe. He took the car to Maaco to have the hard top painted body color and the fools removed the soft top because they were confused on how a car could have 2 tops. It took my Father several days to install the soft top a few months back. Facepalm...
