What can you tell me about the 2004 Ford Focus ZTS? This model has the 2.3L 4 cylinder that puts out more power than the base models. Anything I should look out for? I'm going to look at one that has 125K on the clock, but looks mint (one owner too). Would like a few in sights before I make a final decision!

Ive never owned a focus, but I would want to know if it has a timing chain or belt, what the interval is, and if it has been replaced. Also I would want to know if the engine will suffer catastrophic damage should the chain/belt break. I think the focus reliability has improved since its inception in 2000 or 2001.

The 2.3 is a Mazda motor. It has a timing chain. Not sure about the 2004 but our 2002 ZTS with the 2.0 dohc Zetec 5 speed is now on the third university student. It has been trouble and rattle free for well over 130,000 miles.

Look for any records that could show how well the car was serviced.Note the condiition of the trans. fluid. If the fluid is dark or stinks that's bad.Has the car used Fram oil filters? They can cause early engine failure. Open the driver's door and lift up on the door .this will check the level of wear on the hinges.Loose hinges show the level of use the car has endured.Myself,I don't like Ford's FWD cars. Their trucks are good.Don't pay too much for the car if it has failed the tests I described above.

An '04 may have the sealed air filter unit that is rather costly to replace, so plan for that as it would be due soon w/ 125K.
