Is this worthy of a thread.. no idea. This 2004 3.0L/auto hasn't been a Toyota, the only thing keeping it alive was my stubbornness. We bought in 2006 thinking May, for $21k before we were even married in August. Had 32k then, funny thing around 36k on our honeymoon is the only time it didn't start when the IAC acted up. Never had an issue since then. As far as work I can remember 3 sets of front brakes, rear wheel reconstruction with brackets and fiberglass, alternator case cracked had to replace. Batteries last 5 years give or take a few months. The AC has a slow leak and have to recharge every 2-3 years, been that way since 32k and they couldn't find the leak. So much work if I listed it all would take two posts. I've did all the oil changes even though had like 5 freebies to start out, they left the oil filter loose and almost fell off our honeymoon.

Current issues.. misfires when it's wet out thinking it's the ECM, cats are bad, the back cat broke up long time ago, timing cover leaks probably more than that. We're only changing the oil filter now. It's getting fairly rusty but not unsafe yet. Still has all the original suspension and I think a bushing given up, pulls to right. Even with it's issues still starts and runs great, the CD4E shifts great, rides good and the brakes are good. This is a testament to frequent fluid changes since the CD4E is still alive and the brakes are still decent.

My oldest son is driving it now, the car he came home in. I see him driving it through college. It won't pass inspection in MO so can't go with us in 3 years so it's future in uncertain. A lot of history in this old ride.

Brother’s off/on GF had a Mazda Tribute 3.0 that somehow made it to 260K despite losing the evil exhaust manifold mounted catalyst, she had some kind of rear suspension issue that could have been welded, but they told her it was unrepairable (she was broken up with my brother at that time, so we couldn’t help). Went off & bought herself a Theta powered Tucson, which is already on its SECOND motor! The Tribute was better!

Wonderful story & what a bucket to get around in all of these years. I had that rain/misfire issue on a Festiva and it was the spark plugs. Might as well get some ignition coils while you're in there.

Its had a couple sets of plugs and coils. Had a eBay set for a while but it was worse with those. Current set is NGK with Motorcraft plugs. Only a problem when it damp for a few days with those.

My BIL had one of that generation well over a decade that he bought new. Don’t remember the miles now but they were up there. He had nowhere near as much trouble, go figure. 🤷

The following generation of Escapes were the best to bear that name.

Friend of mine has an escape 2006 or 07. It has 230k miles and the transmission fluid has never been changed.

His experience influenced my decision to buy a 2005 Focus, which has been a problem free daily driver over a year now. 160k miles.

Domestics have some diamonds in the stacks of duds, just gotta know where to look. I’ve been a Toyota fanboy mostly, but wanted to give ‘Merica a chance.

I had a red one from that generation that I really liked. Was reliable and comfortable for my daily commute. I was always a fan of the 3.0 engine they had. The transmission was okay. Glad to hear yours lasted. I traded mine in to get a larger family SUV before hitting 100k miles…

I had a 2003 Tribute LX V-6 that I took to just over 200k miles before the motor gave up from miles and an IAC/Intake/cat problem.
It was, and always will be, the MOST comfortable highway cruiser I have ever had. It took a LOT ($$$) to get it too that mileage, but I just couldn’t stop driving it.
I still miss it at times, and know I will never find anything just like it again.

Restore those headlight lens. You will be able to see at night.

That’s pretty good. You definitely don’t see many of these on the road anymore. Mom had a red one for a while. Absolutely loved it, but bought it new and only had it a few years. Hardly a reliability testimony IMO.

Not sure if these are the same, but my brother in law had a later model escape (2012 or so) rust out on him at the rear spring towers. They don’t take care of anything and completely swear off the brand now. Lol
