2004 Accord coolant color

Honda Type II is bluish-green in color. ZAF from what I've seen is a clear looking redish color. Honestly, without knowing what was in the Accord, color is a poor way to tell.

I agree, I don't think one could confuse Type II with a 'green' coolant. Have a partial jug here, seems to look more blue to me in the jug and when being poured than looking in the recovery tank or down the radiator opening. But it has a definite blue hue green coolants don't.

My wife's 04 Accord V6 came with green coolant from the factory and the manual says its good for 10 years...

This was a V6 so I guess its fine.

When the Honda dark green or their type 2 blue is in the radiator or an overflow tank, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two.

The dark green should still be available through the dealer, but mine told me that the type 2 is backwards compatible. Alternatively, you can buy the Beck Arnley anti-freeze in dark green. I believe some O'Reilly stores have it or can order it.

But the Honda dark green is not the same as "old green" we have been using for decades?

No, Honda dark green would not have been/be the same as a silicated original green. An Asian P-(H)OAT like Honda coolant and ZAF have no silicates and nitrates.

Back up. Our 03 Accord V6 had blue from the factory.

Weird. My neighbor's 03 Accord had dark green in it from the factory.

Honda green is not the same as old fashioned green stuff.

Honda coolant has no silicates, and silicated coolant will destroy the water pump. I know this becaused it happened to my dad's 95 Accord.

The stuff in my 03 Accord looks dark green. But then again I didn't pop the top off the reservoir cap to see the actual color. It is hard to tell looking through the plastic.

I have noticed the Honda blue type 2 tends to change to a blue/green color with age. Just changed my 2000 Accord coolant after 7 years and 75k on type 2 and the old stuff has more of a blue/green color compared to the new type 2 going in (pure blue).

I think you can mix the blue Type 2 with any existing Honda color right?

I want to add a little bit to the overflow as judging by my pic I had a couple of posts above I'm really close to the min line. I'd like to get it closer to halfway.

Dealer wants about 20 dollars a jug though...youch

That is correct.

"Always use Honda All Season Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2. This
coolant is pre-mixed with 50 percent antifreeze and 50 percent water. Never add straight antifreeze or plain water.

If Honda antifreeze/coolant is not available, you may use another
major-brand non-silicate coolant as a temporary replacement. Make sure it is a high-quality coolant recommended for aluminum engines. Continued use of any non-Honda coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. Have the cooling system flushed and refilled with Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible."

Taken from my 04 Accord V6 owners manual

The coolant in the expansion tank gets contaminated and discolored after a while. Add some rust and scale to blue it will look green. The plastic tank can stain over time leaving a yellowish appearance. Its hard so see looking down the radiator cap, but its really the only way to know for sure. But even then the majority of owners think they can use any coolant off the shelf for top offs. They buy the cheap green stuff sold on the end of every isle not knowing any better. If its a second owner car this may be the case. I'm a big fan of the Asian coolants. I drain and fill the factory coolant in my Camry every 50k, clean and top off the expansion tank every year. So far, not one single replacement part in the cooling system. I notice that when the coolant in the expansion tank starts looking badly discolored fast, its usually around the time I change it. So the coolant color/quality in that tank may serve as a guide to whats going on in the rest of the system, not sure. But it doesn't happen as fast after I replace the coolant, that's for sure.
