As part of the 60,000 mile service on my 2003 Lexus GS-430 (which I actually performed a bit early), I had the Engine Oil, Transmission Fluid, Antifreeze, and Differential oil analyzed. This posting is on the results for the 5-Speed Automatic Transmission.

Note the operating conditions have changed markedly since this fluid was last analyzed. Previous driving reflected fairly long commutes, with a minimum of stop and go type of driving. This UOA reflects a very short commute of only 6 miles at a time, with the car not getting fully warmed up each time. I think the results reflect this. It took me 17 months to go 11,512 miles on this interval. Note the Aluminum readings marked with a '*' - Analysts, Inc marked the Aluminum readings as worthy of monitoring....

The "miles on oil" as you seem to suspect, is misleading...It is the number of miles since I last drained and refilled it. Unfortunately, when draining from the drain plug in the pan, I can only get about 2.5 (out of 9.5) quarts out. So, in reality, only 2.5 quarts out of 9.5 has 11,512 miles on it...The rest has considerably more.

Given that metals are inching up, and total solids are up to 0.2, I think the next time I'm going to do a complete flush - perhaps by removing one of the connections to the ATF cooler. Isn't 0.2 for total solids starting to get a little high for ATF fluid?

OK got it.

0.2 doesn't seem super bad, but indeed I would do the complete job next time.

Nope, I wouldn't waste money on a complete flush.

Everything looks excellent here. Since driving style changed, simple upgrading to a 'yearly' drain refill vs mileage would be better.

If you want to remove the .2 wear, since city driving will accumulate wear more quickly, INSTALL A FILTER.

Invest in a permacool(with filtermag) or Magnefine filter. Change it every 2 years. A filter would be a better investment then a flush.
