I just bought my daughter a 2003 Ford Escape 2WD with 65,000KM and the manual 5 speed trasmission. First thing I would like to do is change the fluid in the transmission.

Not sure if this transmission uses ATF or not, but what would be a good recommendation?

Manual Transmission,G5M-R......GL-4
Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube (75W-90) API GL-4 (MTGQT)

75W-90 seems to be the word.

Do you think I could use Castrol Syntec 75W90 GL5 It is MT1 rated?

Or should I hunt down the hard-to-find GL4?

There is nothing hard to find about GL4. The thing is you might have to pay a little more for it and have it shipped to your front door.

If the transmission requires GL4, then use it. Don't put a GL5 gear oil in a manual requiring GL4.
