2003 Buick century code clearing

Hey guys,

Like I posted a couple weeks ago, I just had a motor swapped out of an 03 Buick century for another of the same. This morning I tried to hook up my code reader to clear the codes and get rid of lights but my code reader just kept saying "waiting for vehicle to respond" and then it would go back to the main screen.

I can't get the code reader to sync up to the car at all. Any ideas?

The car just died while rolling up to a stop sign on my way back from getting breakfast earlier so I wanted to clear the codes and lights from the "post motor swap" to narrow down that die off.

I've never done a motor swap in a vehicle but my son is having the same problem with his 01 sports trac in regards to his camshaft sensor. We ran thru everything from harness to the sensor, battery, alt... Just get these unexpected problems from time to time I guess.

Anyways I can't really help with the scanner but if you still have the previous motor you may be able to grab a few parts off of it. I really have no bases to say this but from my experience with GM vehicles specifically the 3.8 and low speed stalls it tends to be more times then not the throttle position sensor. However this would typically have other problems with it as well in regards to the transmission going into limp mode but you haven't mentioned anything about that. I would just run thru the ignition side of things and make sure everything is properly seated and the connectors are clean.

Stupid question I know but did you check the ECM fuse?

Actually I did not....

If you disconnect the negative terminal for half an hour or so, it should clear them. I've done that with my 03 century to clear an o2 sensor code.

Has it had a check engine light on all along since it left the shop? Why didn't your mechanic take care of that?

I had another code reader hooked up to it the other day and it showed one code for bank 1 upper o2 sensor. I'll be replacing that come payday. Why on earth my brand new code reader won't sync to the Buick I don't understand but oh well. If I had called the mechanic to fix that issue it would be cost me about 100 bucks part and labor so I'll just do it myself for the cost of the part.

I misunderstood, I thought it wasn't running and the reader wouldn't communicate. If its running the ECM fuse is okay. It sounds like a problem with the first more than with the car.

It could be your "bad" scan tool is having a hard time figuring out if it should use CANbus, VPW, ISO, etc. Several different protocols and/or pinouts. The good one guesses correctly, first.
