2002 Subaru WRX, 34k miles, M1 5W30

Hmm. I really don't think my driving is that extraordinarily hard compared to other WRX drivers. I'm very careful not to hit boost until the engine is thoroughly warmed-up. 95% of the time I'm just cruising along at under 3k rpm. A couple times a day I'll do full-throttle runs up to 60-70 mph, never hitting redline and usually peaking at 6k rpm. I never do hard launches.

I think I'll try M1 10W30 at the next change.

Thanks for your advice.

BTW, I googled around a bit and it seems like modern engines do use some lead surfaces in some of the bearings.

They recommend 5W30 for temperatures under 100F and 10W30 or 10W40 for temperatures over 0F.

Dave, that sounds nearly identical to the driving style I have, but my oil analysis results have been perfect even when running a strange mix of oil. Of course, I haven't run 7k miles though, only 5k, but with the driving you describe and the results I've got at 5k mi, I wouldn't expect 7k to be out of reach. In fact, I'm going to 7k with my current fill.

Here's my first UOA running 3300mi on M1 0w30:

That was sorta what I was trying to get at in my earlier post. I assume most WRXen drive their beasts in a similar, "spirited" fashion ... but most UOAs (regardless of oil brand/type) look positively excellent.
